Kate Middleton is set to return to public engagements this Sunday, July 14, 2024. The Princess of Wales, who is 42 years old, announced in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. The Kensington Palace has confirmed that she will make a rare public appearance at the men’s singles final this weekend.
During the event, Kate is expected to present the trophies, fulfilling her role as the patron of the All England Club. This will mark her second official public engagement in seven months, following her appearance at the Trooping the Colour ceremony on June 15.
Kate, who shares three children with her husband, Prince William, has been recuperating privately since she underwent major abdominal surgery in January. It was during this time that she learned of her cancer diagnosis.
In a moving video statement released in March, she shared, “I had major abdominal surgery in London in January, and at that time, it was believed that my illness was not cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests conducted after the procedure revealed the presence of cancer. My medical team advised me to undergo preventive chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment. This was, of course, a great shock, and William and I have been doing our best to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken time for me to recover from major surgery before I could begin treatment. But most importantly, we have needed time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, assuring them that I will be fine. As I’ve said, I am doing well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal—mind, body, and spirit. Having William by my side is also a great source of comfort and reassurance, along with the love, support, and kindness that so many of you have shown me. It means a lot to both of us. We hope you understand that as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to returning when I can, but for now, I must focus on making a full recovery.”
