Live with Kelly and Mark wrapped up the week with a light-hearted Friday show, but the co-hosts still didn’t deprive us of a little husband and wife banter.
On this morning’s episode, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos concluded some sweet segments at the top of the episode — including a story about a woman who graduated from Stanford University at 105 years old and a bride who crocheted her entire dress and her husband’s tuxedo for their wedding day — before launching into their next topic, which got Consuelos into a bit of hot water.
“Summer Skin Week wraps up with some common misconceptions about the aging skin,” Consuelos said, before turning and looking very directly at his wife and co-host.
Big mistake!
Ripa grinned as the crowd applauded, then paused for a beat and turned to her husband.
“Why are you looking at me?” she asked as he laughed nervously.
“I have no misconceptions about it!” Ripa exclaimed. She then told the audience, “I’ve decided that from now on, I’m going to sleep hanging upside down. That’s the next phase.”
Consuelos chimed in to suggest, “with some weights,” as he mimed applying weights to his own face.
Ripa took it even one step further, joking, “Weights attached to all parts of my body.”
Sounds like an interesting nighttime routine, but with these two, that’s not too out of the ordinary. Ripa has previously shared some tidbits about her husband’s sleep habits, specifically airing her complaints about his snoring.
During a June episode of Live, Ripa told viewers that her husband was snoring so loud the night before that he woke himself up, saying, “His snoring got so insurmountable for him, that he woke up, and shushed himself. I’m not kidding. He shushed himself. I was like, ‘Are you shushing me, because you’re shushing you.’”
When Consuelos asked her what his snoring sounds like, Ripa didn’t spare him. She quipped, “There’s a meme of a child crying, listening to their father snore. That is all of us. The kids and I send this to each other constantly because no matter where you are in the house, if Mark is sleeping, you can hear him snoring.”
A silly on-air spat led to Kelly Ripa giving Mark Consuelos the sound of silence on this morning’s Live with Kelly and Mark.
While on the topic of “sending lengthy voice memos,” Consuelos recalled a time when he witnessed Ripa engage in a conversation via voice memos with her friend Elsa that “went on for like a half an hour.”
“And I said, ‘Just call her,’” he quipped.
Ripa then fired back at her husband, teasing, “Oh? Is there something irritating about a conversation on speaker phone that bothers you suddenly?”
After Consuelos reiterated that they could have just gotten on a phone call, Ripa clarified that her friend “was driving.”
“So I think she was recording from her speaker in her car,” she explained.
Consuelos continued his jabs, deadpanning, “Cause that’s easier than just calling.”
“Remind me to show you some videos I shot of Mark,” she shared, “because Mark can only have conversations with his Italian soccer team ON SPEAKER PHONE!”
Consuelos replied, “I thought you liked Italian. I thought you liked when I spoke Italian.”
While Ripa confirmed that she “love[s]” hearing her husband and co-host, she noted that he’s not the one speaking during such calls.
“I’m listening to press conferences,” she continued. “It’s so funny that somebody’s so upset by two voice memos going back and forth — the voice memo, and me responding to it, because it’s two, to be clear. ‘Hey blah blah blah, what are you doing?’ ‘Nothing much, I’ll call you later.’ Ok? That’s —”
Consuelos interjected, “I wish that was it.”
While he said that he’s “not upset,” and began to highlight “a difference between men and women,” Ripa teased, “We’re gonna roll the tape!”
Consuelos continued, “The difference between men and women… I wasn’t upset, I just find it peculiar. Like when husbands find something peculiar, it doesn’t mean that they’re upset. They just find you guys peculiar. Peculiar. Peculiar.”
That explanation wasn’t enough for Ripa, who told viewers, “Tune in for peculiar. You can go to my Instagram stories, and watch Mark listen on speaker phone, during dinner time, to a meeting, and then occasionally he’ll jump in with, ‘Ey, ey, si!’”
Consuelos teased that he’s “comfortable being silent sometimes,” which seemingly took things too far, as Ripa then opted to remain mum. Amid laughter, Consuelos asked, “Oh, you’re gonna be silent now?”
Ripa joked, “Like the song says, ‘Enjoy the silence.’”
However, she really meant it, as Consuelos was hilariously left to discuss their next topic — “a gathering of Kyles in Texas” that failed to break the Guinness World Record — by himself.
Eventually, Live EP Michael Gelman chimed in to suggest that they attempt to break the record with Kellys or Marks during the show’s annual “Guinness week.”
When asked for input, Ripa simply smiled, held two thumbs up, and nodded her head. Only after Gelman asked if he was “getting the silent treatment too” did she break.
“Let me unmute myself. I think it’s a great idea,” she finally said.
Consuelos couldn’t help himself from one more joke at Ripa’s expense.
“Listen, if I were to continue this thing, like an idiot, I would say something like this,” he said. “But I’m not an idiot, so I’m not going to say it. But if I were an idiot, I would say, ‘Please show me where that mute button is!’ I would never say that, because that would be stupid!”
Ripa replied, “You found it!”
