Mackenzie Ziegler, known to her fans as Kenzie, is stepping into the spotlight with a fresh perspective. The 20-year-old singer is gearing up for the release of her new album, “Biting My Tongue,” which is set to drop on July 26. In a recent interview, Kenzie opened up about her journey, her evolving style, and the ongoing sock debate that has taken TikTok by storm.
“I have been biting my tongue for a very long time,” Kenzie shared, hinting at the personal nature of her upcoming album. The title itself reflects her desire to finally express her thoughts and experiences. “It’s very personal, and everything that I talk about is something that has gone on in my life,” she explained.
Kenzie is embracing a new era in her music, one that feels raw and authentic. “It’s a little scary to release,” she admitted, but she is ready to share her story with the world. Alongside her musical evolution, Kenzie is also celebrating her carefree aesthetic. “My style is constantly changing every day, which is so fun,” she said. “When I was younger, I stuck to one style. Nowadays, it’s great to express yourself in a variety of ways. You can be really hot and cute or super comfy and tomboy.”
As summer approaches, Kenzie is fully indulging in the season’s fashion trends. “I’ve been indulging in Brat Summer. How can you not?” she exclaimed. Recently, she partnered with HEYDUDE, a cozy shoe brand, to promote their new hybrid sneaker-loafer, the Wally and Wendy COMF. “The black Wendy COMF would definitely go with that aesthetic, but you really have to do up the outfit for Brat Summer,” she noted. “There are no limits, which is so fun.”
In her interview, Kenzie shared her thoughts on summer style and the perfect beach day outfit. “I like comfort over anything, but since it’s summer, I have been wearing a lot of shorts with higher socks and a T-shirt. It’s really casual nowadays,” she said. This casual vibe is complemented by her favorite footwear choice, the Wendy COMF. “I love a chunky platform shoe. It’s also comfortable, which you don’t usually get in a platform,” she explained. “I can wear them to dance class and then dinner with my friends. They are so versatile, cute, and comfy.”
The conversation then shifted to the ongoing debate on TikTok regarding sock styles, particularly the preference between no-show socks and higher socks. Kenzie weighed in on the topic, stating, “I obviously think wear whatever you want, but for me, I look so weird when I wear no-show socks. I always wear a higher or a scrunchier sock with a shoe.” This lighthearted take on the sock debate reflects Kenzie’s fun and relatable personality.
As she prepares for her album release party, Kenzie is excited about her outfit choices. “Honestly, my sister, Maddie Ziegler, is so good at putting together outfits for me. I’m sure she will come over and style me fully, which I’m very excited for,” she said, highlighting the close bond she shares with her sister.
Kenzie recently made an appearance in Role Model’s music video for “Look At That Woman,” and she described the experience as enjoyable and effortless. “The experience was awesome. It was honestly such an easy shoot. We just walked in and went in the photo booth and acted like we were taking pictures,” she recalled. The collaborative nature of the project allowed her to connect with other artists, including Umi, whom she admires for her talent.
When it comes to songwriting, Kenzie draws inspiration from a variety of female artists who are making waves in the music industry. “I look up to a lot of females in the music industry. Women are running the music industry right now,” she said. Artists like Gracie Abrams, Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lennon Stella have influenced her creative process. “I listened to her Three. Two. One. album a lot of the time. It was really cool listening to all of their music and figuring out how I could do something like that because their music is so awesome,” she added.
Among the tracks on her upcoming album, Kenzie expressed particular excitement for “Casualty.” “It’s one of the last songs I finished on the album, and it’s more of the direction that I’m going in with my music. I’m really excited for everyone to hear it. It’s super raw and there’s not much production to it. It’s just very singer-songwriter and authentic. I’m super proud of that one,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Kenzie is contemplating the possibility of going on tour. “I am working on it, but hopefully yes. I would love nothing more,” she said, expressing her eagerness to connect with fans through live performances. When asked about her footwear choices for the road, she confidently stated, “The COMFs, obviously. Tour is exhausting, and so they would definitely help out a lot.”
Kenzie’s journey is a testament to her growth as an artist and an individual. With her new album on the horizon, she is ready to embrace her authentic self and share her story with the world. As she navigates the ever-changing landscape of music and fashion, Kenzie remains grounded in her values and her love for creativity.
As summer unfolds, Kenzie’s carefree spirit and unique style will undoubtedly resonate with her fans. Whether it’s through her music, her fashion choices, or her thoughts on the latest trends, Kenzie is a voice for her generation, encouraging everyone to express themselves freely and authentically.
