Kevin Bacon has made it clear that he won’t dance to "Footloose" like a "trained monkey." At 65 years old, the actor, who portrayed Ren McCormack in the iconic musical from 1984, reflected on how, even after four decades, people still request that he perform the film’s signature dance. However, he admits he doesn’t really know how to do it.
In an interview with the Metro column "60 Seconds," Bacon stated, "When people say, ‘Do the Footloose dance,’ I don’t know what the Footloose dance is. I’m not a trained monkey."
He recalled a recent experience where he was asked to dance during a tribute event for "Footloose" screenwriter Dean Pitchford. "Not long ago, I was on a red carpet for the inclusion of Dean Pitchford—who wrote the script for ‘Footloose’ and co-wrote all the songs—in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. My brother and I performed the song for him. It was a lot of fun. But on the red carpet, a couple of people asked me, ‘Are you going to dance to ‘Footloose’? And I said, ‘No! I’ll do it when I want to, but not when I’m told to.’"
Despite his reluctance to be pressured into performing, Kevin mentioned he doesn’t mind the mention of the viral game "Six Degrees," which connects him to any Hollywood actor in just a few steps due to his extensive film career. "I don’t care about Six Degrees anymore, thanks to sixdegrees.org,” he explained. “We turned it into a charity foundation, and a lot of good things have come from that. So, I’ve embraced Six Degrees, and it doesn’t bother me."
Interestingly, Bacon used to be "horrified" by the meme and initially thought it was just a joke at his expense. In a previous appearance on the podcast On With Mario Lopez, he commented, "I always think it’s just because I’ve been in so many movies with a lot of people, huge casts! I was horrified because I thought it was a joke at my expense. I thought, ‘Come on, they’re making fun of me, let’s be realistic.’"
While he may have had some initial concerns, it seems that Kevin has come to appreciate the strange ways in which his career is celebrated.
