Kiefer Sutherland took his early success ‘for granted’

Kiefer Sutherland reflected on his early success in the film industry, noting that he took it for granted. At 57 years old, he achieved a remarkable streak of successes during the first ten years of his career. However, the tide turned when opportunities began to dwindle, which he found challenging to navigate.

In an interview with The Times, he admitted, “I took for granted the movies I made in my twenties. Everything was going well for the first ten years of my career. Suddenly, the opportunities vanished. It was devastating. I was forced to make a decision: I could either take on a slew of bad movies or take a break until I found something I wanted to do. So, I decided to take some time off.”

Eventually, Kiefer chose to step back from the entertainment industry. Yet, at the beginning of the 2000s, he landed the iconic role of Jack Bauer in the hit drama series “24,” which marked a pivotal moment in his career.

Sutherland shared, “For ten years, I was involved in the rodeo. I had a small farm in Montana and loved roping. Then ’24’ came along, and I dove into it for another decade.”

Looking back at his youth, Kiefer admitted he was always in a hurry to grow up. Now, with the wisdom of hindsight, he finds himself regretting certain choices. “I was eager to grow up. I wish I hadn’t stolen that car when I was a teenager. I just wanted to drive and feel older. There are things I would have done differently, but I’m grateful for some of the brave choices I made. When I left home, it was the first time teenagers were really playing teenagers on screen, so I was there at just the right time.”

Through his reflections, Sutherland offers a glimpse into the pressures of fame, the importance of taking time for oneself, and the bittersweet nature of growing older in the spotlight.
