Kimberly Cheatle, the former director of the United States Secret Service, resigned on Tuesday following criticism over security failures at a recent campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania. At this event, former President Donald Trump experienced an assassination attempt, as reported by NBC News.
Cheatle faced mounting pressure from both Democrats and Republicans, who were calling for her resignation after a 20-year-old man injured Trump during the rally on July 13. The assailant approached the former president, managing to inflict a minor injury to his ear, despite being outside the secured area of the event.
In her email to the staff, Cheatle expressed, “I take full responsibility for the security lapse” and added, “In light of recent events, I have made the difficult decision to step down from my role as director.” Her tenure as head of the Secret Service began in August 2022 and was marked by increasing demands for her resignation as investigations unfolded regarding how the attacker could get so close to Trump during the outdoor rally.
On the day of her resignation, Cheatle testified before a House committee, describing the event as the “biggest operational failure” for the agency in decades. She reiterated her accountability for the security shortcomings and confirmed her cooperation with ongoing investigations.
The Republican opposition had been vocal about their demand for Cheatle’s resignation, given her role overseeing the protection of Trump. During the Butler rally, the shooter had climbed onto a roof approximately 140 meters from the former president, well outside the intended security perimeter.
Witnesses reported noticing suspicious behavior from the shooter two minutes before the shots were fired. The suspect, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by Secret Service agents after he opened fire, injuring Trump and fatally wounding a bystander. Two others were also hurt in the chaos.
During the hearing, lawmakers criticized Cheatle for her refusal to answer many questions, citing ongoing investigations into the incident. The Department of Homeland Security announced an independent investigation ordered by President Joe Biden, which involves officials from both parties and is expected to conclude within 45 days.
Video footage captured moments before the shooting shows Crooks preparing his position, while witnesses alerted police about his presence. A local officer attempted to confront Crooks but ultimately could not prevent him from shooting. The sheriff later noted that the officer was caught in a precarious position and unable to draw his weapon when confronted by the shooter.
This incident has sparked intense scrutiny regarding security protocols and responsibilities between the Secret Service and local law enforcement agencies. Questions persist about how Crooks managed to find a vantage point to target Trump and why no police officer was stationed on the roof.
Critics have pointed to a concerning reliance on local police, who lack the elite training of Secret Service personnel, raising alarms about the agency’s adequacy in resourcing its protective measures. Jason Chaffetz, a former chairman of the House Oversight Committee, characterized this security lapse as a “catastrophic failure” and emphasized that such a situation should never have been feasible.
