King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to visit Australia later this year. The 75-year-old monarch has recently undergone treatment for a type of unspecified cancer, but he plans to travel to the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales during this trip.
According to a statement from the Australian government, “In the official portraits, the King wears the Sovereign’s Insignia of the Order of Australia, while the Queen dons the Wattle Brooch, a gift to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, during her visit to Australia in 1954.”
Buckingham Palace announced that Charles and Camilla would attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, scheduled for October 21-25.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It is an honor for me to welcome the Kings on their first royal visit to Australia this year. The King holds a deep appreciation for our great nation and has always spoken warmly about the time he has spent here, as well as the stunning beauty of our extraordinary continent. I want to extend a warm welcome to the King and Queen back to Australia for this important visit.”
This will mark the first time a monarch and their spouse have visited Australia since 2011, when the late Queen Elizabeth, who passed away in 2022 after 70 years on the throne, toured the country with her late husband, Prince Philip, for ten days.
However, the King, who has returned to public duties after a break for treatment in January, will not be visiting New Zealand due to medical advice. Buckingham Palace stated, “The King’s doctors have advised against such an extensive schedule at this time to prioritize His Majesty’s ongoing recovery.”
