It was an emotional Wednesday for actress Lola Herrera as she received the ‘Lorenzo Luzuriaga’ Award at the Corral de Comedias in Almagro. This honor, presented by UGT-Servicios Públicos, celebrated her remarkable artistic career.
In her remarks, Herrera emphasized the nature of her work, stating, “This job allows you to play very seriously and invites others to play as well.” She reflected on the lasting impact of performances, noting that while memories can fade, some experiences touch the soul and stay with you forever. “As an audience member, I have seen performances I will never forget,” she added.
She also took a moment to reminisce about her beginnings and express gratitude for her supportive parents. “I was fortunate that they understood my desire to become an actress and allowed me to pursue my dreams. Thanks to them, I was able to forge my path.” However, she observed that aspiring actors today face greater challenges. “Back then, the profession was small and few wanted to enter it because it was seen as undesirable, but now many people are drawn to it, making it quite complex.”
When asked about her favorite character, Herrera clarified that she couldn’t choose just one. “I’ve portrayed Carmen Sotillo from Delibes in five different eras over the past forty years. I’ve played many women who have taught me invaluable lessons. If I had only been Lola throughout my life, I wouldn’t have survived. These characters allowed me to step outside of myself for four or five hours a day. Each role leaves a mark on you, just as you leave something behind in them.”
She acknowledged that her career has also required sacrifices. “During my first pregnancy, I performed until eight months along, and just 17 days after giving birth, I was on stage in Burgos. It took me three months to see my daughter. I cried all over Spain. Even on the day my father passed away, I continued to work.” Nevertheless, she concluded proudly, “This is a beautiful, truly beautiful profession.”
