Luis Caputo travels to Brazil and hopes to meet with Kristalina Georgieva from the IMF.

Economy Minister Luis “Toto” Caputo and Finance Secretary Pablo Quirno will attend the G20 ministerial meeting starting on July 24 in Rio de Janeiro. Caputo aims to have a face-to-face meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This potential meeting comes shortly after President Javier Milei harshly criticized Rodrigo Valdés, the IMF’s director for the Western Hemisphere, accusing him of undermining the Argentine government.

In addition to discussing matters with Georgieva, Caputo also plans to hold talks with Ajay Banga, the President of the World Bank, Ilan Goldfajn, the President of the Inter-American Development Bank, and Mathias Cormann, the Secretary-General of the OECD.

These efforts may not sit well with authoritarian figures who are uncomfortable with critical journalism, which serves as a vital pillar of democracy. Such scrutiny often irritates those who view themselves as the sole arbiters of truth.

The situation is still developing.
