Lupita Nyong’o Adopted a Cat to Help Her Through a ‘Difficult Time,’ and Now She Can’t Live Without Him

Lupita Nyong’o has adopted a cat to help her navigate through a "difficult time," and now she can’t imagine her life without him.

The Oscar-winning actress, known for her role in 12 Years A Slave, once had a fear of cats. However, she grew to love Schnitzel, the furry co-star she worked with on the film A Quiet Place: Day One. After facing a personal crisis, she felt compelled to adopt a cat, revealing that Yoyo has truly "opened her heart."

In an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Lupita shared her journey with cats. She explained that making the movie pushed her to learn more about felines, and she initially had to pretend to love the cat for her role. But in the process, she found herself genuinely falling for it. "There’s something that melts your heart when they cling to you. When I returned to my real life and was going through a tough time, a little voice told me: ‘Adopt a cat’. So I did, and I have no regrets. I feel much less alone with my cat. He has opened my heart.”

Lupita has previously confessed to her fear of cats before taking on the role. In a conversation with ¡HOLA!, she admitted, "I was scared of them before making this movie. I couldn’t even be in the same room with a cat, so that wouldn’t have worked. But I went through therapy and gradually overcame my fear. I got to the point where I could convincingly portray Sam, a devoted cat owner."

Recently, Lupita moved from New York to Los Angeles, and she is enjoying re-connecting with nature in her new surroundings alongside Yoyo. She mentioned to ¡Hola! that her transition has brought her a sense of peace. "I’ve recently moved from New York to Los Angeles, so now I have much more silence than before. My quiet place is anytime I force myself to take a digital pause to reconnect with myself, away from my phone or social media. I truly believe that taking time to hike and appreciate nature eliminates much of the mental noise."

Lupita’s blossoming relationship with her feline friend and her newfound appreciation for nature are a testament to her resilience and personal growth in the face of challenges.
