Lupita Nyong’o Felt Immense Pressure After Winning an Oscar

After winning an esteemed Oscar, Lupita Nyong’o felt an immense amount of pressure. The actress, known for her role in “12 Years a Slave,” received the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Sir Steve McQueen’s 2013 film about 19th-century slavery.

In an interview with People magazine, the 41-year-old actress revealed, “It definitely made me feel pressured. It was my first film, and I received what is considered the pinnacle of achievements for an actor. So I thought, ‘Okay, what will I do now? I can’t afford to fail.'”

When asked about the worst professional advice she ever received, Lupita shared, “I was told that I needed to capitalize on the moment and do something bigger. The next step after ’12 Years a Slave’ had to be a leading role in a blockbuster. But for me, it was never about the size of the role. It was always about the quality.”

Lupita also mentioned that her ambitions became clearer after a conversation with acclaimed Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, who is 65 years old. Thompson advised her, “You have to live your life in the way you think is best. You have to listen to your intuition. Up until that point, I had not followed any formula, so there didn’t need to be one moving forward. She told me, ‘You have to give yourself permission to fail.’ It was great advice during a time when everyone was saying, ‘Capitalize on the moment, find that lead role, and do this and that, and blockbuster films.'”

It seems that Lupita took Emma’s advice to heart. After her Oscar win, she returned to the stage in the Broadway play “Eclipsed” in 2016, which earned her a Tony nomination. She reflected, “I listened to my intuition. I went back to the theater and did a play on Broadway, which really helped me overcome feelings of impostor syndrome and the fear of failure.”

Through her journey, Lupita Nyong’o embodies the essence of following one’s instincts in the pursuit of meaningful work.
