Luxury and Contemporary Architecture in the Heart of Sigüenza’s Historic District

In the heart of Sigüenza, a historic city in the province of Guadalajara, stands a unique house designed by the Freehand architecture studio, led by Mexican architect Lourdes Treviño. This remarkable structure is a testament to respectful architectural practices, perfectly blending into its culturally rich surroundings.

Sigüenza is renowned for its valuable medieval heritage, which demands respect from all architectural projects. The professionals at Freehand Arquitectura embraced this challenge and successfully constructed a house that honors local architectural norms.

To create a spacious, modern, and light-filled home, the Freehand team adopted an innovative approach. The various living spaces are organized around a central patio, providing not only a cozy atmosphere but also ample natural light throughout the interior. One architectural highlight is the double-height areas that enhance the sense of space while adding character and personality to the rooms.

The exterior of the house was meticulously designed to ensure full integration with its environment. It adheres to official requirements, featuring a stone façade with specific finishes and traditional tiled sloped roofs. Instead of typical shutters, aluminum shutters resembling the traditional ones from the city’s old town were installed on the windows.

One of the primary focuses of this construction project is energy efficiency. The architects utilized every available resource to minimize energy consumption. They carefully studied the building’s orientation to maximize sunlight in winter and provide shade in summer. The house benefits from an aerothermal system that efficiently regulates its temperature, enhancing thermal comfort. Additionally, ceramic flooring and a cooling underfloor heating system were installed.

The living room serves as the heart of the house, designed to be comfortable and inviting. At its center lies a glass-fronted fireplace, perfect for cold winter days. This space features various areas, including a cozy seating area with four gray-upholstered chairs arranged in a circle around a round rug, fostering conversation. On one side is the sofa, while the other side boasts a dining area with a large wooden table and modern gray-upholstered chairs.

Double-height spaces serve multiple functions in this original home. They help maximize square footage by creating functional areas at different heights while increasing the overall sense of spaciousness. Natural light flows freely, making the interiors feel airy and contemporary. The house is equipped with large windows that offer beautiful views of the city, including the cathedral and the surrounding walls.

This project encompasses more than just the construction of the house; it also includes interior design, decoration, and landscaping in the outdoor areas. Every aspect of the home is crucial in achieving a sense of harmony throughout. Calm and serene corners are abundant, including one at the bottom of the stairs, furnished with modern design pieces on a black and white floor.

Integration was the project’s key goal. It wasn’t just about creating a luxurious modern home but also ensuring it harmoniously coexists with the historic character of the surrounding buildings and cultural heritage. This posed a significant challenge for the Freehand Architects team. While they adhered to construction regulations on the façade, the interior features innovative elements like a stunning, modern staircase that adds a contemporary touch to the space.

The interior design in the bedrooms and relaxation areas on the upper floor aims to achieve harmony. Contemporary furniture made of noble materials is complemented by neutral-colored curtains, bedspreads, and cushions that facilitate easy coordination. One of the bedrooms leads to a dual-height area via a wooden staircase, flaunting a contemporary railing design.

Every space in this house is fully utilized. For example, a cozy loft corner has been transformed into a practical study area with a double desk. Accessible through the wooden staircase from the bedroom, this nook becomes a comfortable and private space for studying or reading.

The entire project showcases a thoughtful approach to design that values both modern living and historical context. It stands as a beautiful example of what can be achieved when architecture respects and enhances its surroundings.
