Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson have teamed up for a new thriller, “Flight Risk,” and the production was completed at an astonishing pace. Wahlberg, 53, shared with PEOPLE that he and Gibson, 68, wrapped up filming in just 22 days. The movie also stars Topher Grace and Michelle Dockery.
Wahlberg praised Gibson’s directorial skills, noting, “He knew exactly what he wanted and how to get it, but he was also open to collaborating.” Gibson’s last directorial effort, “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016), garnered two Academy Awards and several nominations, setting high expectations for “Flight Risk.”
The rapid filming schedule was a new experience for Wahlberg. “I’ve shot down ‘n dirty, but 30 days was the fastest I’d ever done a film,” he said. “This was in 20 or 22 days.” The actor was impressed by the efficiency and clarity Gibson brought to the project.
“Flight Risk” features Dockery as a U.S. Marshal tasked with transporting a prisoner, played by Grace, on a small flight from Alaska to New York City. Wahlberg plays the pilot of the three-person plane. The plot thickens when Dockery’s character realizes that Wahlberg’s character is actually a hitman sent to kill her prisoner.
Wahlberg and Gibson have previously worked together as actors in “Father Stu” (2022) and “Daddy’s Home 2” (2017). However, this is their first collaboration with Gibson behind the camera. Wahlberg expressed his admiration for Gibson’s directorial work, citing films like “Apocalypto” and “Braveheart” as inspirations. “He’s such a talented filmmaker,” Wahlberg said. “For me, it’s always top of the list: the script, the director, and the part are the three main components when making a choice.”
The actor also revealed that he and Gibson had discussed various project ideas while working on their previous films. When Gibson sent him the script for “Flight Risk,” Wahlberg responded immediately. The film’s setting, primarily taking place on a small plane, added to the tension and claustrophobia, enhancing the thriller’s intensity.
Wahlberg met his co-stars, Grace and Dockery, for the first time during the making of “Flight Risk.” He described the experience as “a bit claustrophobic,” but felt that the close quarters ramped up the tension effectively.
The film’s trailer reveals a significant twist: Wahlberg’s character, initially appearing as a southern-accented pilot, is actually a hitman. This role marks a departure for Wahlberg, who hasn’t played a villain in quite some time. Fans of his earlier work, such as his breakout role in “Fear” (1996), will find this performance reminiscent of his intense, unhinged characters.
“Flight Risk” is set to hit theaters on October 18. The film promises a gripping narrative with Wahlberg’s character caught between Dockery’s determined U.S. Marshal and Grace’s vulnerable prisoner. The enclosed setting of the plane adds a unique layer of suspense, making it a must-watch for thriller enthusiasts.
Wahlberg’s collaboration with Gibson on “Flight Risk” showcases their combined talents and ability to deliver a high-stakes, fast-paced film. The actor’s willingness to take on a villainous role and the film’s rapid production schedule highlight the dedication and skill of everyone involved.
As the release date approaches, anticipation for “Flight Risk” continues to build. The film’s intriguing premise, combined with the star power of Wahlberg, Gibson, Dockery, and Grace, ensures it will be a standout addition to the fall movie lineup.
