Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves are celebrating a significant milestone in their relationship. On Sunday, the Oscar-winning actor marked their 12th wedding anniversary with a heartfelt Instagram post. “Thank you #happyanniversary,” the couple captioned their joint post. The touching message was accompanied by a photo of McConaughey tenderly holding Alves’ face as he kissed her forehead.
McConaughey, 54, and Alves, 41, first crossed paths in a nightclub back in 2006. Their love story took a significant turn when they got engaged on Christmas Day in 2011. The following year, they tied the knot in a three-day celebration in Austin, Texas. The couple shares three children: Levi, 15, Vida, 14, and Livingston, 11.
In a 2022 interview, Alves humorously admitted that she and McConaughey often struggle to remember their wedding date. “Matt and I are not good with dates with our marriage,” Alves confessed. “We go back and forth all the time.” She recounted a funny moment when they both got the date wrong, only to find a koozie from their wedding that proved them both incorrect.
Recently, the couple shared a Western-themed picture to commemorate their anniversary. McConaughey, donning a beige cowboy hat and a denim jacket with fleece lining, kissed Alves on the forehead in the romantic shot. Alves, with her eyes closed and her black hair down, looked serene in the sunset-lit image.
The couple’s journey began in 2006 when McConaughey was instantly captivated by Alves’ beauty. “Out of the corner of my eye, this sort of aqua-green figure went floating across the frame about 20 feet in front of me,” McConaughey recalled in a 2016 interview. “My eye went up and I remember what came out of my mouth. I didn’t say, ‘Who is that?’ I went, ‘What is that?'”
Determined to meet her, McConaughey approached Alves, and the rest is history. They welcomed their first child, Levi, in 2008, followed by their daughter Vida in 2010. Their wedding in 2012 was a grand affair, with their children playing significant roles as ring bearer and flower girl. Celebrities like Woody Harrelson, Reese Witherspoon, and Kenny Chesney were among the guests.
In 2014, the family moved from Malibu, California, to Austin, Texas. Alves noted that McConaughey seemed happier and more at peace in his home state. “We were living a happy life in Malibu,” Alves said. “But when we came to Austin, I noticed a peaceful but confident, energetic look about him.”
The move brought a sense of ritual back into their lives, with family dinners, Sunday church, and storytelling sessions becoming regular occurrences. “Ritual came back, whether that was Sunday church, sports, dinner together as a family every night,” McConaughey explained. “Or staying up after that telling stories in the kitchen, sitting at the island pouring drinks and nibbling while retelling them all in different ways than we told them before.”
Over the years, McConaughey and Alves have embarked on various professional ventures together, including launching their tequila brand, Pantalones. Despite their busy schedules, they always make time for each other and their family. In a 2020 interview, McConaughey shared that he had never wanted to be with anyone else since meeting Alves. “Since [the evening we met], I have not wanted to spend time with any other woman, definitely have not wanted to sleep with anyone else. I’ve not wanted to have children with anyone else other than her,” he said. “We have a love that we never question.”
As they celebrate their 12th anniversary, McConaughey and Alves continue to inspire with their enduring love and commitment to each other. Their journey together is a testament to the power of love, family, and shared adventures.
