Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly reached out to Kate Middleton before her recent public appearance at the Trooping the Colour ceremony. The Princess of Wales, 42, made a notable return to the public eye during King Charles’ birthday celebrations, joining the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
Despite not having seen Kate since her cancer diagnosis was revealed, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have extended their well wishes to her. According to sources, Harry and Meghan have been closely following Kate’s recovery, albeit from a distance due to their limited communication with the palace and the Waleses.
“Both Harry and Meghan have been following Kate’s recovery with huge interest, but sadly it’s had to be more from afar because their lines of communication with the palace and the Waleses, in particular, are very limited, to say the least,” a source told Closer.
The insider added that while the Sussexes’ attempts to connect haven’t elicited much of a response from Kate, they remain hopeful that her return to public duties might ease tensions and potentially lead to a truce with Prince William and King Charles.
Harry has visited the UK twice this year but has not met with his estranged brother or sister-in-law. Instead, he only saw his father, King Charles, in February. Meghan did not accompany Harry on either trip, choosing instead to meet him at Heathrow Airport before they flew to Nigeria together.
A source revealed that Meghan is “desperate to come across as the bigger person and end this feud between them,” believing that appearing as a “royal savior” could benefit her image. “Meghan has made it clear she’d love nothing more than to move past all the nonsense and find a way towards healing for everyone’s sake. She’s ready to let the anger and bitterness go,” the insider said.
The “Suits” alum, 42, reportedly hopes her feelings are being conveyed to Kate through mutual friends. The insider noted that making peace with the Waleses would be a significant relief for Meghan, as it would improve her reputation and the new brand she is cultivating.
However, former royal butler Grant Harrold told The Post that he believes it may be “too late” for the two camps to reconcile.
Meghan and Harry’s relationship with Kate and William has been strained since Harry introduced Meghan to the royal family. Before their wedding in May 2018, Meghan and Kate had a disagreement over Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress, which led to a text argument and left Meghan in tears. Kate later sent Meghan flowers and a card to apologize.
The relationship between the Sussexes and the Waleses continued to deteriorate, especially after Meghan and Harry stepped back from their royal roles in 2020 and moved to the US. The couple has publicly criticized William and Kate several times, particularly in a 2021 TV interview with Oprah Winfrey and in Harry’s 2023 autobiography, “Spare.” Despite this, William and Kate have maintained a dignified silence on the matter.
In a show of support, Harry and Meghan have publicly and privately reached out to Kate following her cancer diagnosis. In a statement shared with PEOPLE, they said, “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were last seen with Kate and William in September 2022, during a surprise walkabout in Windsor following the death of Queen Elizabeth. The couple had extended their trip from California for the late Queen’s funerary events.
Kate announced her cancer diagnosis in a video message on social media, revealing that post-operative tests following her abdominal surgery in January had found cancer. She is currently in the early stages of treatment. Kate and William have taken time to explain the situation to their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Prior to Kate’s public health update, a family source told PEOPLE that Harry and Meghan were unaware of Kate’s surgery and recovery details. “They are aware of everything that goes on back in England, but are being left out of any details regarding Kate,” the source said, adding that there is “clearly no trust” between the two couples.
While Harry traveled to the UK in February after King Charles’ own cancer diagnosis, his brief stay did not involve meeting with William or Kate. At the time, a royal source said there were “no plans” for the two brothers to get together during Harry’s visit.
