Minister of Education Promises to Review “The Conditions of Residents” Following the Suicide of Student Catalina Gutiérrez

Catalina Gutiérrez Zuluaga, a specialized surgery student at the Javeriana University, tragically ended her life after enduring repeated episodes of harassment and mistreatment from both professors and colleagues. This heartbreaking event has sparked widespread criticism and calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led her to make such a drastic decision.

In response to this incident, newly appointed Education Minister Daniel Rojas took to his social media account to express his condolences to Gutiérrez’s family. He also committed to reviewing the conditions of health students, particularly those in residency programs.

Minister Rojas extended his sympathy not only to Gutiérrez’s family but also to the educational community at Javeriana University. He pledged to prioritize the review of the circumstances surrounding health students to ensure their well-being and to prevent similar instances of mistreatment in academic environments.

He urged the Ministry of Education team to initiate inspections and necessary actions to clarify the quality conditions of resident students. This step is intended to address the identified problems effectively, promoting both transparency and well-being within educational settings.

In his message, Rojas stated, “I extend my deepest sympathies to the Gutiérrez Zuluaga family and the Javeriana University community for this painful loss. As the newly appointed Minister of Education, I commit to urgently and thoroughly examining the conditions of health resident students.”

The university administration also released a statement expressing their condolences and acknowledging the profound impact of Gutiérrez’s death on the educational community. They emphasized this tragedy has prompted serious reflection on the culture surrounding the training of medical specialists.

Moreover, Álvaro Rueda, a representative from the Liberal Party, announced his intention to convene a political debate focused on Minister Rojas in light of Gutiérrez’s suicide. He aims to discuss the measures the Ministry will introduce to combat violence directed at students. Rueda asserted that Colombia can no longer normalize violence against students within the educational system.

He expressed grave concerns over historical issues in education, highlighting a troubling culture of bullying, pressure, and maltreatment that has led to fatal decisions among students, including suicide.

As the community grapples with the consequences of this tragedy, there is an urgent call for systemic change to address the well-being and mental health of students in educational institutions.
