Missy Elliott wants fans to enjoy the concert without being glued to their phones.

Missy Elliott wants her fans to enjoy concerts without constantly checking their phones. The 53-year-old rapper reminisced about a time when superstars performed on stage without the distraction of mobile phone cameras. She expressed a desire for today’s audience to fully experience the show, rather than fixating on recording it.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, she remarked, “I wish people could live the moment like we did. If you look back at old performances of Janet [Jackson] or Bobby Brown, there were no phones. All you heard were screams and people dancing. They were in the moment. I wish it were like that, but clearly we don’t live in that time anymore.”

Despite her sentiments, the singer of “Work It” acknowledged that if she were in the audience, she would feel compelled to capture everything on camera. She confessed, “I know myself; if I were at my own show, I would want my phone on because I wouldn’t want to miss anything. In a way, it’s like a vicious cycle.”

The Grammy-winning star was prompted to share her thoughts on recording live moments after her colleague, rapper Busta Rhymes, expressed frustration when concertgoers continuously recorded his performance at the Essence Festival in New Orleans.

During his performance, Busta said, “Forget about cameras. Let’s interact as humans. Leave those weird devices behind. I’m not from that era. Those devices don’t control us all.” Ironically, his remarks were captured by fans in the audience, showing him pointing to people and encouraging them to enjoy the show.

He added, “I’m going to point out each and every one of you. Thirty-three years of this. I’m not used to my show not being enjoyed. I don’t care. Everyone of all ages, get up now.” Addressing those seated towards the back, he urged, “What’s going on? Lift your heads.”

In an age of digital distractions, both Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes highlight the importance of living in the moment and engaging with the performance directly. While it’s tempting to record memories, nothing can replace the experience of enjoying a live show with all your senses.
