The government believes that the European Commission’s report on the rule of law in Spain does not criticize the Amnesty Law nor provides any recommendations, effectively endorsing the legislation, according to sources from Moncloa.
They also argue that the report highlights the “significant progress” achieved through the agreement between the Popular Party (PP) and the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) to renew the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ).
Additionally, the report addresses the “removal” of the Anti-Corruption Office in the Balearic Islands and points out the “reduction in the budget” for the Anti-Fraud Office in the Valencian Community.
The government further notes that the Commission refers “harshly” to an incident involving the chief of staff of the president of the Community of Madrid and the press. This behavior is seen as a challenge for journalists to effectively carry out their work.
Finally, the report is said to support the “democratic action plan” initiated by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. It encourages Spain to implement changes to the regulations surrounding institutional advertising to prevent its use for partisan purposes across all levels of government.
