Nadia Erostarbe: “Anything Can Happen at Teahupo’o”

Spanish surfers Nadia Erostarbe and Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri both acknowledge that at Teahupo’o, “anything can happen.” This wave is known for being not only intimidating but also unpredictable, yet they remain hopeful about their performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Erostarbe pointed out that surfing has always been an integral part of the Basque Country, which explains their representation in the Games. She recognizes that there are favorites, but emphasizes that they are among them. “This is a wave we are not accustomed to competing on. There are favorites who have competed here much more, but we are within their ranks,” she said during a press conference organized by the Spanish Olympic Committee.

Speaking from Tahiti, Erostarbe, along with the rest of the historic Spanish Olympic surfing team, expressed her views. “One of my strengths is that I face this wave head-on, which makes it easier for me. Spending time here has built my confidence, and that’s a significant asset,” the talented Basque surfer stated.

Moreover, she highlighted the unpredictability of Teahupo’o: “Anything can happen here. The wave might offer a spectacular tube, or it could be a day for turns in search of high scores. We’ve experienced more turning days so far. Anything can happen,” she remarked.

Erostarbe also noted that this is their first time at this venue for competitions, which feels unusual given the many restrictions they face. “It’s generally a very quiet place. It remains calm, but with many regulations. We have to show passes and take 30 boats to reach the wave. This is strange for us; we’re not used to these conditions,” she concluded.

On the other hand, Gonzalez Etxabarri shared her admission that the Tahitian wave is quite intimidating. “It’s terrifying and can appear out of nowhere. We’ve had several training sessions, and little by little, we’re improving each day,” she said.

She expressed optimism about their chances: “We will showcase everything we have. Everyone has options. This wave can surprise you, and we plan to enjoy it while demonstrating our skills. We all have a chance, and we will fight for it,” she noted, acknowledging that while it’s somewhat disappointing not to experience Paris and the Olympic Village, they are in a paradise.
