Natalie Portman prefers roles that differ from her real-life situation. The 43-year-old star’s film career spans three decades, and she’s now focused on avoiding parts that she can easily relate to.
When asked about her criteria for choosing projects, Natalie shared her thoughts with Total Film magazine. She explained, "I think what has changed the most is that now I look for things that don’t resemble my life. I’m not sure if I ever took roles that mirrored my life, but I wasn’t consciously aware of it. Now I think, ‘I love my life. I adore my kids and my friends. I don’t want to pretend and be with other kids and friends. I want to engage in something that is an experience I wouldn’t typically have, like exploring my grandmother’s existence, or, you know, playing a rock star or an astronaut—something that makes me feel, ‘Oh, I’m portraying something different.’"
The star of "Black Swan" admitted that she finds it easier to act when she can disguise herself with costumes and accents. She said, "I think it’s always helpful to have these markers that differentiate you from the character. When you have an accent or dress in a different way, you immediately realize that you’re not yourself. Those elements are useful. The hardest part, really, is when you don’t have something to hide behind."
Portman also mentioned that she doesn’t get discouraged when one of her films doesn’t perform well at the box office. She trusts that audiences will eventually find her work through other channels.
The Oscar-winning actress stated, "That’s the great thing about the accessibility of movies now on the internet. I believe people will discover beautiful things in their own time. Of course, I always hope for the opportunity to keep making films. That’s my only wish: that I get to make another one."
