NCT 127 releases sixth studio album

NCT 127, the dynamic K-pop group, has unveiled their sixth full-length studio album, “Walk,” along with a captivating music video for the title track. The album, which dropped on Monday, showcases the group’s signature style and musical evolution.

The title track, “Walk,” is characterized by its heavy basslines and early 2000s hip-hop vibe, reflecting the group’s journey to international stardom. The music video is a visual feast, featuring the nine-member group performing explosive choreography with fire-scorched sneakers and cooling off in a public pool. The album also includes tracks like “Orange Seoul,” a jazzy melody inspired by Seoul sunsets; “Pricey,” a love song with 808 drums; and “Suddenly,” an anthemic track about growing attraction.

NCT 127, known for their fiery rap verses, smooth vocals, and chanted choruses, has consistently pushed the boundaries of K-pop. Band member Haechan reminisced about the group’s 2018 “Chain” music video, which featured high-intensity drills, flamethrowers, and chainsaws. “There were a lot of fun episodes during shooting,” Haechan shared. “We just laughed a lot on that set.”

The group, consisting of leader Taeyong, Jaehyun, Haechan, Doyoung, Mark, Johnny, Jungwoo, Yuta, and Taeil, is a subgroup of the South Korean boy band NCT. NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology, and the number 127 represents Seoul’s longitude coordinate. Other subgroups include NCT U, NCT DREAM, and WayV. NCT 127 was also the subject of a four-part Disney+ documentary series, “NCT 127: The Lost Boys,” which premiered last year.

Their previous albums, “Neo Zone” (2020), “Sticker” (2021), and “2 Baddies” (2022), each sold over a million copies and ranked high on the Billboard 200. Group member Johnny reflected on the challenges of their rapid rise to fame in an interview with Rolling Stone last year. “When we talk amongst ourselves about the past, the most talked-about moments are the toughest ones,” Johnny said. “You can’t talk about those through photos or videos. It’s like, ‘Remember that one time we nearly died of exhaustion?’ It’s ironic that those memories are what we remember most.”

The release of “Walk” marks a significant milestone for NCT 127. According to their label, SM Entertainment, the album consists of 11 tracks that showcase the band’s expanding musical spectrum. The title of the album suggests a reflection on the group’s journey so far and a look ahead at the path they are paving. The LP comes about nine months after their fifth album, “Fact Check,” which debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 1.6 million copies in its first week, setting a record for the group. The new album features only eight members, as Taeyong enlisted in April.

To celebrate their eighth debut anniversary, the bandmates will host a fan meeting in Seoul on August 3-4. This event is highly anticipated by fans who have followed the group’s journey from their debut to their current status as K-pop icons.

NCT 127’s influence extends beyond their music. Their innovative approach to the “Neo” genre has set them apart in the K-pop industry. Formed in July 2016 as the second sub-group of the K-pop supergroup NCT, NCT 127 has gained popularity with hit songs like “Fact Check,” “2 Baddies,” “Sticker,” and “Kick It.” Their last release was the winter special album “Be There For Me” in December 2023, following their fifth full-length album “Fact Check” released two months earlier.

The group’s journey has been documented in various media, including their Disney+ documentary series. This series provided fans with an in-depth look at the group’s experiences and challenges, further solidifying their connection with their audience.

NCT 127’s success is a testament to their hard work, talent, and the support of their fans. As they continue to push the boundaries of K-pop, their latest album, “Walk,” is a celebration of their journey and a glimpse into their future. With their unique sound and innovative approach, NCT 127 is set to continue making waves in the music industry.
