At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, excitement filled Hall H as the cast and director of the highly anticipated film, Alien: Romulus, took the stage. Fans were treated to an exclusive extended trailer that showcased a thrilling array of facehuggers, a hallmark of the iconic Alien franchise.
The trailer, which has not yet been released to the public, was described as a captivating mix of familiar scenes and new footage. It began with some recognizable elements but quickly shifted focus to a chaotic display of facehuggers. One particularly striking moment featured a wall pulsating with the creatures, suggesting they were being studied in a lab-like environment.
As the action escalated, viewers were introduced to three characters trapped in a partially flooded room filled with facehuggers. Andy, a synthetic character, experiences a malfunction, prompting Rain to assist in rebooting him. However, as they attempt to fix Andy, the facehuggers begin to escape. Tension mounts as one character hurls a facehugger away, only for more to awaken and swim toward them through the water. The group makes a desperate attempt to escape, but a swarm of facehuggers breaches the door, leading to a shocking moment where one latches onto Navarro.
While the full trailer remains under wraps, a highlight reel was shared during the panel, showcasing some of the most intense moments. One particularly gripping scene featured Navarro, who, after scanning herself, realizes a facehugger is inside her. As she begins to convulse, Kay tries to help her, but the facehugger violently tears through her chest. Just as Kay screams, their ship crashes, adding to the chaos.
The panel also revealed that the film relies heavily on practical effects, a point emphasized by the cast. Isabela Merced, who plays Kay, noted that even in scenes with only two visible actors, a large team was involved in creating the alien effects. Director Fede Alvarez shared anecdotes about the challenges of capturing the perfect moment of a facehugger jumping out, with actor Spike Fearn having to deliver the line “There’s something in the fucking water” numerous times to get it just right.
In a final clip shown at the panel, Kay wakes up alone in a dimly lit area, navigating through eerie machinery and discovering alien remnants. The tension builds as she encounters a cocoon and is suddenly attacked, culminating in a heart-pounding chase as an alien emerges.
For fans unable to attend the panel, additional news about the Alien franchise was also announced. A prelude one-shot comic from Marvel Comics is set to be released in October, further expanding the universe of Alien: Romulus.
Alien: Romulus marks the seventh installment in the beloved Alien series and is positioned chronologically between the original Alien (1979) and its sequel, Aliens (1986). The film follows a group of young space travelers who find themselves in a deadly confrontation with the terrifying alien species. Director Fede Alvarez reassured fans that newcomers to the franchise would still be able to enjoy the film without prior knowledge of the series.
The cast includes Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine, David Jonsson as Andy, Archie Renaux as Tyler, Isabela Merced as Kay, Spike Fearn as Bjorn, and Aileen Wu as Navarro. Fans can look forward to the film’s release on August 16, 2024, and to celebrate, a themed popcorn bucket will be available in theaters.
As anticipation builds for Alien: Romulus, the franchise continues to captivate audiences with its blend of horror and science fiction. The new trailer, filled with facehuggers and intense action, promises to deliver the thrills that fans have come to expect from this iconic series.
