Nicole Kidman finally addresses her ex-husband Tom Cruise, despite his silence

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were one of Hollywood’s most admired couples during their eleven-year union, during which they adopted two children. The Oscar-winning actress rarely discusses her past with the Top Gun star. However, in recent interviews, Kidman has opened up about her marriage, sharing insights about their collaboration on Eyes Wide Shut, the last film they made together in 1999 while they were still married and raising their kids, Isabella and Connor.

It has been 25 years since they filmed Stanley Kubrick’s last project, while they were still seen as one of the most glamorous couples in Hollywood. Kidman shared with the Los Angeles Times that the director sought to capture the real and intimate relationship they shared on screen. She recalled, "When Tom and I started working with Stanley, we did so at his home. We didn’t even go to Pinewood Studios. Six or eight weeks went by, and we wondered, ‘Are we ever going to start?’ But we just didn’t. We were getting comfortable enough to throw some ideas around."

Kubrick was genuinely interested in their dynamic and asked many questions about their relationship. Kidman noted that he had a clear vision for the story they were telling, mentioning, "I remember him saying, ‘Triangles are difficult. You have to be careful when it’s a triangle.’ He was aware that anyone could feel undervalued in such a situation, but he managed the relationship well." She added that she never felt undervalued, as both she and Cruise had different approaches to working with Kubrick.

Kidman emphasized her special role in the dynamic, saying, "There was something unique about being the woman in that equation because Stanley liked women. He had a different relationship with Tom, and they worked much closer on their characters."

Filming Eyes Wide Shut spanned from 1996 to 1998. Kidman recalled, "We filmed for two years. We had two kids and primarily lived in a caravan, cooking spaghetti because Stanley liked to sometimes eat with us. We were working with the best filmmaker and learning about our lives on set." She remembered how they had a house just ten minutes away but spent most nights in the caravan, which Kubrick insisted they share due to budget constraints. "Tom had a smaller space… He played video games when Minesweeper was all the rage," Kidman reminisced. Tragically, Kubrick passed away from a heart attack just six days after screening the final cut of the film.

Unlike Kidman, who has been candid about their years together, Tom Cruise has chosen to remain silent about that chapter of his life. Notably, during a tribute at Cannes for Cruise, no mention was made of Kidman, despite her starring role in three prominent films of his career: Days of Thunder, Far and Away, and Eyes Wide Shut. While the tribute video featured clips from these films, there was no image of his ex-wife, whereas others, like Penélope Cruz—who starred with him in Vanilla Sky—were included. Reports suggest that Cruise did not participate in the editing of the video tribute, yet it remains evident that he has never spoken publicly about Kidman following their separation.
