Olivia Munn developed a close friendship with Shannen Doherty while both were battling cancer.
The 44-year-old actress revealed in March that she had undergone four surgeries within less than a year after being diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of the disease. After the passing of the ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ star, who died on Saturday following a long struggle with cancer, Munn expressed that she is "absolutely heartbroken" over the news, especially because they had formed a bond during their shared fight against illness.
In a heartfelt message on her Instagram, Munn wrote, "I am absolutely heartbroken by the passing of Shannen Doherty. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I remembered her courage in sharing her battle with the world and reached out to her. We became friends instantly, which sometimes I couldn’t fathom because watching her on ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ meant everything to me when I was 10 years old. We were united by a common fight and a desire to help other women. I’m reminded of the last message she sent me a couple of months ago, asking how I was and if there was anything she could do for me. True to her spirit, Shannen offered her support even as she faced the final stages of her battle with this horrific disease."
Munn, who underwent a double mastectomy followed by medically induced menopause, emphasized that Doherty faced her fight with "dignity," acknowledging how "terrifying" the disease can be.
She added, "Cancer is truly frightening, and Shannen faced it with so much dignity, strength, and grace. I send all my love to her mother, who was her best friend, her champion, and her heroine through it all. Fly high, my friend."
