Mirai Nagasu is embracing the joys of motherhood. The Olympic figure skater and new mom, 31, recently shared heartwarming photos of her baby boy on social media, revealing the surprise birth of her son, Taiga Nagasu Bramante.
In an Instagram carousel posted on July 9, Nagasu proudly introduced Taiga to the world. The first image captured the newborn swaddled in a hospital blanket, lying in a bassinet, and wearing an adorable knitted hat. His wide-eyed gaze into the camera melted hearts. Other photos in the series showed Taiga peacefully asleep and a close-up of his tiny feet. Nagasu, still in her hospital gown, beamed with joy as she posed with her son in two of the photos.
The 2018 Olympic Games bronze medalist had kept her pregnancy a secret for months, only announcing the arrival of her baby boy on June 20. In a promotional Instagram video for View Boston, she explored the city’s Prudential Center while holding Taiga. “It’s an interactive experience for everyone, even families with newborns like mine,” she said in the voiceover. “Look how locked in Tai is as he learns all about Boston,” she added. “And yes, surprise I had a son!”
Once the news was out, Nagasu opened up to PEOPLE about her decision to keep her pregnancy private. “Choosing to keep my pregnancy a secret until after his birth was a deeply personal decision,” she explained. “In an age where social media often defines our reality, I wanted to step back and truly connect with the people closest to me face-to-face. While sharing everything online can be wonderful, I believe there’s immense value in disconnecting and logging off from time to time.”
Nagasu shares her son Taiga with her fiancé, Michael Bramante. The couple had also kept their relationship under wraps for an entire year before making it public. “We tried this thing where we told (in person) everyone that we’re engaged before posting about it on social….so this is from over a year ago,” Nagasu captioned their engagement photos, which she shared in an Instagram carousel on June 18. The photos, tagged at Boston Common and Public Garden, showed the couple enjoying each other’s company in Massachusetts’ capital city.
The 31-year-old figure skater’s surprise baby announcement came just days after she revealed her engagement to Bramante. In a sponsored Instagram post promoting View Boston, Nagasu showed fans around the tourist attraction while carrying her baby son. “It’s an interactive experience for everyone, even families with newborns like mine,” she said in the voiceover. “Look how locked in Tai is as he learns all about Boston,” she added. “And yes, surprise I had a son!”
Fans were thrilled by the unexpected news. “Best new baby announcement EVER!” one excited follower commented. “WHAT A HARD LAUNCH. Congrats!” another chimed in. Fellow figure skater Polina Edmunds also shared her excitement, commenting, “Oh my goosshhhh Congratulations❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️” Another social media user added, “Surprise after surprise this week omg, congratulations!!”
Nagasu made history at the 2018 Winter Olympics by becoming the first U.S. female figure skater to land a triple axel during an Olympic competition. Her recent announcements have only added to her legacy, showing a new side of her life beyond the ice rink.
Days before her baby announcement, Nagasu confirmed her engagement to Michael Bramante, 32, which took place over a year ago in Boston’s Public Garden. She shared multiple Instagram posts with photos from the occasion, showing the couple looking loved up in the city. In one photo, the couple was all smiles while touching their noses together and standing in the park. “We tried this thing where we told (in person) everyone that we’re engaged before posting about it on social… so this is from over a year ago,” Nagasu captioned one of the posts.
Nagasu’s journey into motherhood and her engagement reveal have been met with overwhelming support and joy from her fans and followers. As she navigates this new chapter in her life, the Olympic figure skater continues to inspire with her grace, both on and off the ice.
