Palermo Voltios: Deployed Tasers on a Man Who Was Hitting Cars and Threatening with a Knife

Days after announcing the addition of more Taser guns to their standard equipment, the City Police detained a 51-year-old man on Saturday. This individual was causing damage and attacking cars in the Palermo neighborhood while threatening bystanders with a knife.

Police attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the man tried to flee through the nearby park. Eventually, officers subdued him using the Taser, and he was charged with “assault and resisting arrest.”

The incident unfolded during a routine patrol by an officer from the 14th Community Police Station at the intersection of Del Libertador Avenue and Iraola. The officer, riding an all-terrain vehicle, confronted the man as he vandalized vehicles in the area.

The police presence only escalated the man’s aggression, leading him to threaten the officer with a kitchen knife. Backup from the Rapid Intervention Deployment group quickly arrived at the scene, and they also urged him to stop.

Since the man continued to resist, one officer deployed a Taser, as captured by the body camera footage. According to the security forces, all options had been exhausted before taking this action.

Later, emergency medical personnel attended to the man. The Flagrancia North Unit, led by Emanuel Fermoselle, officially ordered his detention for assault and resisting arrest. The knife and the Taser were confiscated and will be examined by the Scientific Police.

City Government Chief Jorge Macri commented on the situation, highlighting that the use of a Taser helped prevent a potentially lethal outcome. He emphasized the importance of ensuring quick and safe interventions, reinforcing their commitment to safety and prevention.

Meanwhile, City Security Minister Waldo Wolff reiterated that low-lethality weapons are essential for detaining criminals and protecting the lives of community members, police officers, and even the aggressors involved.
