A division of the Supreme Court of Justice in Peru has confirmed the seizure of a pair of yellow gold hoop earrings adorned with diamonds that were worn by President Dina Boluarte. The earrings were reportedly purchased by regional governor Wilfredo Oscorima, as announced by the Judicial Power on Monday.
Oscorima acquired the jewelry in June of last year, and Boluarte has showcased them during several public appearances. She also claims that other luxury items, including three Rolex watches and a diamond bracelet, were loaned to her by the governor, all of which have also been seized by the authorities.
The Supreme Court’s Pre-Trial Investigation Court granted the request for a judicial confirmation of the seizure, as presented by the National Prosecutor’s Office. The decision was communicated through their account on the social media platform X.
As a result of this investigation, Boluarte is facing allegations of illicit enrichment linked to the jewelry, which is valued at over $160,000, along with an alleged asset increase totaling 432,000 soles (approximately $115,000). Additionally, she is being scrutinized for failing to report these items in her declarations and for potential passive bribery after receiving the jewelry and watches from Oscorima, whom she acknowledged as her friend.
In turn, Oscorima is being investigated for general active bribery due to his act of donating these luxury items over the course of a year, following requests for budget increases for the Ayacucho region under his leadership.
Oscorima’s legal team has voiced concerns about the seizure process initiated by the prosecutors, especially during an exhibition of the confiscated items at the Public Ministry’s headquarters.
The prosecutors, however, defended the seizure as a necessary measure to pursue corruption cases, stating that it aims to secure items related to the ongoing investigation. They clarified that the seizure does not impact the actual ownership of the items, only their possession, as the goods are currently secured and marked with custody seals.
