Now, the industry is buzzing with the news that Peter Hawkings has resigned from his position as designer for Tom Ford.
Hawkings has been part of the American fashion house for nearly two decades. He stepped into the role of creative director following Tom Ford’s own exit from the brand. However, just over a year after taking the position and presenting a single collection, Hawkings bids farewell to the brand.
Peter Hawkings began his journey in the fashion industry by collaborating with Tom Ford during Ford’s tenure at Gucci, specifically within the men’s ready-to-wear sector. In 2006, when Ford departed from the Italian house to establish his namesake label, Hawkings accompanied him to support its launch and continue their collaboration.
For 18 years, Hawkings worked closely with Ford in menswear, becoming his best apprentice. This proximity to Ford’s creative vision allowed Hawkings’ designs to perfectly align with Ford’s, making him the ideal successor within the brand.
Tom Ford stepped down as the creative director of his namesake brand after selling it to the Zegna Group in 2022. That same year, the renowned beauty line was acquired by Estée Lauder, although the group had already managed the brand’s license since 2006, suggesting there won’t be any drastic changes in the near future.
It remains uncertain who will take over the creative direction of the brand, with several possibilities on the table but no confirmations yet. The upcoming spring/summer 2025 collection from Tom Ford is scheduled to debut in September at his showroom in Milan, opting for a private presentation instead of a fashion show.
Hawkings appears to be leaving the American house amicably and there are multiple opportunities available in the fashion industry. Notably, Chanel and Givenchy have yet to appoint new creative directors, which may open doors for Hawkings to step in. While nothing is guaranteed, it will be intriguing to see what projects he takes on next.
