Pharrell Appears To Take Aim At Drake On New Single Double Life

Pharrell Williams seems to have subtly responded to Drake’s previous disses in his latest track “Double Life.” The song, part of the Despicable Me 4 soundtrack, has fans speculating that Pharrell is taking shots at the Canadian rapper.

Released this past Friday, “Double Life” features lyrics that many believe are directed at Drake. Pharrell sings, “Hey, what are you hiding? / What you do when you’re gone? / Nothin’ wrong bein’ private / Make sure it ain’t wrong / Your life double-sided / Two-faced like coins / What side do I get? / What side are you on?”

He continues with, “So what have you done? / Some of your dirt has come to light … Lie detector time / Do you feel bad when you lie?” While Pharrell doesn’t explicitly name Drake, the lyrics have been widely interpreted as a response to the “Hotline Bling” artist.

The tension between Pharrell and Drake isn’t new. Their issues date back to 2018 when Pharrell’s close friend Pusha T engaged in a rap feud with Drake. Feeling slighted by Pharrell’s apparent support for Pusha T, Drake has taken aim at Pharrell multiple times since then. Most notably, Drake rapped on Travis Scott’s 2023 song “Meltdown,” “I melt down the chains that I bought from yo boss / Give a f**k about all of that heritage s*** / Since V not around, the members done hung up the Louis / They not even wearing that s***.”

This lyric references Drake purchasing some of Pharrell’s multi-million-dollar jewelry that was auctioned off and takes a shot at Pharrell succeeding the late designer Virgil Abloh as Louis Vuitton’s new menswear creative director. As of now, Drake hasn’t responded further.

Fans have been dissecting Pharrell’s “Double Life” since its release, with many believing the song is a direct response to Drake’s previous jabs. The speculation is fueled by Drake’s 2023 feature on Travis Scott’s track “Meltdown,” where he claimed to have melted down a chain once auctioned by Pharrell. This attack surprised listeners, as it seemed to drag Pharrell into Drake’s long-standing feud with Pusha T.

Pharrell has never directly addressed the beef, and he even co-produced the 2021 Brent Faiyaz and Drake collaboration “Wasting Time.” However, it appears that all bets are off since Kendrick Lamar aired out Drake in several songs this year.

Ironically, Lamar appears in Pharrell’s upcoming LEGO-animated biopic, Piece by Piece, set to release in October. The ongoing feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar has been heating up, with Lamar recently releasing a diss track titled “Euphoria,” which takes aim at Drake.

Drake and Kendrick’s feud dates back to Lamar’s explosive “Control” verse in 2013 and his subliminal disses at the BET Hip-Hop Awards that same year. The tension has only escalated, with Drake recently releasing a diss track titled “Push Ups,” targeting Kendrick Lamar, Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, Future, and Rick Ross.

In “Push Ups,” Drake jabs at Lamar’s small stature and the financial splits on his contract with Top Dawg Entertainment. He raps, “How the f— you big steppin’ with a size seven men’s on / Your last one bricked, you really not on s— / They make excuses for you ’cause they hate to see me lit / Pull your contract ’cause we gotta see the split / Ain’t no way you doin’ splits b—- your pants might rip.”

Drake also takes shots at Rick Ross, putting his correction officer past on blast and taking credit for their collaborative hits. Ross quickly responded with his own diss track, “Champagne Moments,” accusing Drake of stealing Lil Wayne’s flow and alleging that he got a nose job.

As the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar continues to unfold, Pharrell’s “Double Life” adds another layer to the ongoing drama. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see how Drake will respond to Pharrell’s latest track and whether the tension between these artists will escalate further.
