Isabel Allende’s iconic novel, The House of the Spirits, is being adapted into an eight-part Spanish-language series. Set to film in Chile, the series will premiere on Prime Video, as announced by Amazon this Monday.
The series will feature executive production from both Allende and Eva Longoria. The star-studded cast includes Dolores Fonzi, Alfonso Herrera, Nicole Wallace, Juan Pablo Raba, and Fernanda Castillo, among others.
This adaptation, which is based on one of the most significant Latin American novels of the 20th century, follows the story of a family saga spanning three generations in a fictional Latin American country. The novel was previously adapted into a film in 1993.
In her statement, Allende expressed her excitement: “My first novel, The House of the Spirits, has been published around the world for 40 years, and now it will be a wonderful series on Amazon with Eva Longoria leading an unparalleled creative team. I hope everyone enjoys it.”
The series is expected to be released in 2024 and is produced by FilmNation, the company behind the feature film Anora, which won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Additionally, it will have support from Fábula, a Chilean production company whose documentary La memoria infinita was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars this year.
Javiera Balmaceda, an executive for Amazon Studios overseeing Latin America, Canada, and Australia, shared her enthusiasm, stating that bringing The House of the Spirits to life for audiences around the globe is a "dream come true."
“Our goal has been to celebrate Allende’s literary masterpiece, showcasing the brilliant Latin American talent both in front of and behind the camera, while taking an innovative approach to storytelling,” she added.
