Isabel Allende’s celebrated novel, ‘The House of the Spirits,’ is set to be transformed into an eight-episode Spanish series. Amazon Prime Video announced the adaptation this Monday, confirming that filming will take place in Chile.
The series will be produced under the executive guidance of Allende herself, along with Eva Longoria. The cast is expected to feature notable names such as Dolores Fonzi, Alfonso Herrera, Nicole Wallace, Juan Pablo Raba, and Fernanda Castillo, among others.
This adaptation of one of the most significant Latin American novels of the 20th century will chronicle a family saga that spans three generations, unfolding in a fictional Latin American country. The novel was previously adapted into a film in 1993, and this new series aims to bring its rich narrative to a contemporary audience.
In a statement released on Monday, Allende expressed her excitement: “My first novel, ‘The House of the Spirits,’ has been published for 40 years, and now it will become a wonderful series on Amazon with Eva Longoria leading an unparalleled creative team. I hope everyone enjoys it.”
Anticipated to premiere in 2024, the series is being produced by FilmNation, known for the acclaimed film ‘Anora,’ directed by Sean Baker, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year. It will also enjoy the support of Fábula, a Chilean production company whose documentary ‘La memoria infinita’ was nominated for Best Documentary at this year’s Oscars.
Javiera Balmaceda, who oversees Amazon Studios for Latin America, Canada, and Australia, shared her enthusiasm about the project, calling it a "dream come true" to bring ‘The House of the Spirits’ to global audiences. She added, “Our goal has been to celebrate Allende’s literary masterpiece, showcasing the brilliant Latin American talent both in front of and behind the cameras while adopting an innovative approach to the story.”
This promising series not only honors Allende’s work but also highlights the vibrant talent present in the Latin American creative community. You can find more details about the series and follow its development on Amazon Prime Video.
