Prime Video to Adapt Isabel Allende’s ‘The House of the Spirits’ into Series

The novel "The House of the Spirits," the acclaimed work by Chilean author Isabel Allende, is set to be adapted into an eight-episode Spanish-language series. This exciting news was announced by Amazon’s Prime Video platform on Monday. The filming will take place in Chile, bringing the story to life in its native setting.

Isabel Allende herself will serve as an executive producer for the series, alongside actress Eva Longoria. The cast will feature talented actors such as Dolores Fonzi, Alfonso Herrera, Nicole Wallace, Juan Pablo Raba, and Fernanda Castillo, among others.

Based on one of the most representative Latin American novels of the 20th century, the series will weave a family saga that spans three generations within a fictional Latin American country. This story was previously adapted for film in 1993.

In a statement released on Monday, Allende expressed her excitement, stating, "My first novel, ‘The House of the Spirits,’ has been published worldwide for 40 years, and now it will become a wonderful series on Amazon, with Eva Longoria leading an unmatched creative team. I hope everyone enjoys it."

The series is expected to premiere in 2024, produced by FilmNation, the company behind the film "Anora," which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Additionally, the project will have support from Fábula, a Chilean production company known for its documentary "La memoria infinita," which was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars this year.

Javiera Balmaceda, who oversees Amazon Studios for Latin America, Canada, and Australia, shared her enthusiasm, saying it is a "dream come true" to bring "The House of the Spirits" to global audiences. She emphasized the team’s goal of celebrating Allende’s literary masterpiece by showcasing outstanding Latin American talent both in front of and behind the camera, and by taking an innovative approach to the story.

This adaptation promises to be a significant addition to the rich tapestry of modern storytelling, reflecting the depth and complexity of Allende’s original work.
