Republicans on Sunday insisted that if President Joe Biden is unfit to run for re-election in 2024, he should also resign from office immediately. They also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He should resign immediately. November 5th can’t come soon enough,” wrote House Speaker Mike Johnson on X.
“If Joe Biden ends his re-election campaign, how can he justify remaining as president?” questioned JD Vance, the newly nominated vice-presidential candidate for Donald Trump.
Professional, critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy. It is often troubling to those who consider themselves the sole bearers of truth.
Continuing, Mike Johnson added, “As second-in-command and an inept border czar, Harris has been a willing accomplice, not only in the destruction of American sovereignty, security, and prosperity but also in the greatest political cover-up in U.S. history. She has known for a long time, as well as anyone, that Biden is incapable of serving.”
A notable statement from Joe Biden announced, “I believe the best thing for the party and the country is for me to step down.”
President Biden announced this Sunday that he will not seek re-election, following weeks of speculation about his physical condition and mental agility. He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for the upcoming presidential elections.
“While it was my intention to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country to withdraw from the race and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a letter posted on X.
“If Joe is too weak to continue in the presidential race, he should resign as our Commander-in-Chief immediately,” wrote Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee on X following the news.
“If Joe Biden cannot run for re-election, he is not fit to serve as President of the United States. He should step down immediately,” added Elise Stefanik, Chair of the House Republican Conference, in her own post.
Supporting the nomination of Kamala Harris, the statement reinforced her backing as the Democratic Party’s candidate.
“Then RESIGN from your office. If you can’t handle a simple political campaign, you cannot be president,” wrote Republican Senator Josh Hawley.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to be the Democratic candidate for president, he is not fit to be president for the remainder of his term. For the good of the country, Joe Biden should resign immediately,” wrote Republican Representative Kevin Hern of Oklahoma.
“If Joe Biden is no longer able to run for re-election, he is no longer able to serve as president,” wrote Senate Republican Campaign Chair Steve Daines of Montana. “I no longer trust that Joe Biden can effectively execute his duties.”
Biden’s decision to withdraw from the re-election race has been driven by pressure within his own party calling for him to step aside.
“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is best for my party and the country that I step down and focus exclusively on fulfilling my responsibilities as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a Sunday statement.
Donald Trump responded by asserting that Biden was never “fit to be a candidate” nor a president and that Harris will be easier to defeat.
“Corrupt Joe Biden was never fit to run for president and certainly isn’t fit to serve — and he never was! We will suffer a lot because of his presidency, but we will quickly undo the damage he has done,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform following Biden’s announcement.
