Review of Star Wars: The High Republic Temptation of the Force

When temptation arises, who will yield? The galaxy faces individual choices as the Nihil Stormwall conceals darker secrets than initially believed. Chris’s review of “Star Wars: The High Republic – Temptation of the Force” delves into the next chapter of The High Republic series.

The Nihil’s scheme to dominate the galaxy and strike a decisive blow to the Jedi reaches its peak. With the installation of the perilous Stormwall, their control over the Force-defying Nameless creatures, and the spreading blight, the Jedi find themselves in a dire situation. Yet, amidst this chaos, the smoldering relationship between Avar Kriss and Elzar Mann captures attention.

“Temptation of the Force” is a novel brimming with stories, each appealing to different readers. It carries the heavy burden of numerous narratives and high expectations. Fortunately, the novel manages this burden well. While it may not meet everyone’s expectations, it propels the plot of the entire Phase forward significantly, and all characters experience substantial growth.

One of the novel’s strengths is that every character faces “temptation.” This doesn’t necessarily mean a choice between good and evil but rather a pivotal decision that irrevocably changes them. Despite the numerous points of view (POVs), each character has a distinct moment of temptation, central to their development. These choices vary in magnitude, from life-and-death decisions to matters of the heart, but all leave a lasting impact.

The novel features several POV chapters, primarily focusing on Elzar/Avar, Bell/Burryaga, Porter Engle, and Marchion Ro. While some readers might feel there are more POVs, these four major stories are engaging, even if they progress at different paces. The Engle storyline, however, felt repetitive and unsatisfying to some, but opinions may vary.

The relationship between Elzar and Avar is the emotional core of the initiative. Their dynamic is compelling, even for those who typically don’t connect with romance stories. Gratton’s writing and the characters’ depth keep readers engaged.

As Phase III of The High Republic progresses, the stakes rise for both characters and readers. Reviewing this book on its own merits is challenging, as it is part of a larger narrative. As a middle chapter of Phase III, the novel succeeds in pushing the story forward, though some storylines could have concluded here. The grand finale awaits in Charles Soule’s upcoming “Trials of the Jedi.”

Despite the complexity, “Temptation of the Force” is one of the more accessible THR novels. It stands well on its own, with minimal need for external context, except for the Porter Engle storyline.

“Temptation of the Force” provides a strong middle chapter to the final Phase of THR. It pushes characters towards the endgame, leaving readers eager for more.

In the lead-up to the release, Lucasfilm Publishing Creative Director Michael Siglain unveiled new concept art. Artists Ario Anindito and Diogo Saito contributed action-focused poses of key characters, adding excitement to the release.

“Star Wars: The High Republic – Temptation of the Force” is a story about love in various forms. It explores themes of family, romantic, empathetic, maternal, parental, and even love of power and control. Picking up after “The Eye of Darkness” and “Defy the Storm,” the Republic and Jedi Order face a desperate situation. The Nihil have seized control of a significant portion of the galaxy, but love persists, offering hope.

Elzar Mann and Avar Kriss are central to this story. Their relationship, built over the entire initiative, drives their narrative. As the Jedi find ways to defeat the Nameless and breach the Stormwall, the Republic launches an attack against the Nihil. Despite winning the battle, Marchion Ro remains a step ahead.

The novel wears its theme of love on its sleeve. Every character grapples with love in some form, whether it’s Marchion Ro’s obsession with power, Ghirra Starros’s love for her daughter, or Porter Engle’s pursuit of revenge. These intertwined stories highlight the complexities of love and its impact on each character.

The story of Elzar and Avar is particularly poignant. As Jedi, they struggle with their romantic love for each other while maintaining their commitment to the Jedi Order. Their ability to manage this love without falling to the dark side is a lesson Anakin Skywalker could have learned. Their connection ultimately helps them defeat a Nameless creature, showcasing the power of love.

The novel also features significant details to watch for, such as Vernestra Rwoh’s actions, which tie into “The Acolyte” series. The conflict between Porter Engle and General Viess continues from the “The Blade” mini-series, adding depth to their storyline. Additionally, the San Tekka clan’s proximity to Monument Plaza on Coruscant offers a nostalgic connection to “The Mandalorian.”

While some storylines find resolution, there is more to come. The Republic’s precarious position and the looming threat of the Nihil set the stage for the final book in this arc, “Trials of the Jedi,” by Charles Soule.

Tessa Gratton has crafted a meaningful story within the complex world of The High Republic. Her focus on characters and themes showcases her skill as a writer. The coordination between Lucasfilm and the writers ensures a cohesive narrative across books, comics, and live-action projects.

“Star Wars: The High Republic – Temptation of the Force” is available now, continuing the epic saga of The High Republic.
