Having triumphed in the Season 1 finale of “Unstable” over those trying to oust him from his own company, biotech genius Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) will face new challenges in the Netflix comedy’s second season, which drops on Aug. 1. And this time, his own son, Jackson (John Owen Lowe), is among his potential usurpers, as the Season 2 trailer reveals.
In a statement provided by Netflix to accompany the trailer’s unveiling, Rob Lowe wrote: “Early response to the second season of ‘Unstable’ has been fantastic, and we are excited to share our official trailer with Variety. As you will see, it contains some very good comedy and even better hair.”
In his praise for Season 1 of “Unstable,” which premiered in March 2023, Variety’s Daniel D’Addario wrote: “Those who tune in just to see a TV star bounce jokes off his real-life son will end up treated to a show with a spirited, frisky sense of humor, the ability to hit a wonderfully high percentage of the many, many densely packed jokes it attempts, and a really lovely lead performance by the junior Lowe.”
Co-stars Sian Clifford, Rachel Marsh, Emma Ferreira, and Aaron Branch return for the upcoming season. Fred Armisen will reprise his recurring role as Leslie, Ellis’ therapist. Lamorne Morris and Iris Apatow also join the show’s recurring cast, playing another biotech founder and a new intern, respectively.
The show’s logline reads: “In Season 2 of ‘Unstable,’ universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) lays out a series of challenges and mind games for his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe) to see if he has what it takes to succeed him as the heir to the Dragon empire. But does a newcomer have other ideas?”
The executive producers of “Unstable” are new showrunner Andrew Gurland, Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe, Sean Clements, and Claire Scanlon.
Rob Lowe Is Still Unstable for Season 2. The comedy added Lamorne Morris and Iris Apatow to the cast for the new season, premiering this summer. Biotech genius Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) is behind bars in the first teaser for Unstable Season 2 — well, sort of. He’s training for his seemingly inevitable imprisonment — you know, after the explosive ending of Season 1.
Created by Lowe, his son John Owen Lowe, and Victor Fresco, Unstable follows eccentric entrepreneur Ellis as he reconnects with his estranged son, Jackson (John Owen Lowe), who moves back home to help pull his father out of an emotional freefall. At the end of Season 1, a last-minute technological breakthrough saw Ellis narrowly avoid being removed from the board of his own company. Instead, he ousted his friend turned rival, Jean (Christina Chang)… and then blew up her car. He’ll have to face the music this summer when the series returns for Season 2.
Co-creators, stars, and executive producers Rob and John Owen Lowe tell Tudum, “It’s a dream come true for us to jump back into the world of Unstable. Here’s to Season 2 and the many hours of family therapy that we will need along the way.”
When is the Unstable Season 2 premiere date? The next season of Unstable will premiere on Aug. 1.
What will Unstable Season 2 be about? Ellis lays out a series of challenges and mind games for Jackson to see if he has what it takes to succeed him as the heir to the Dragon empire, but a newcomer might have other ideas.
Who will star in Unstable Season 2? Along with both Lowes, returning cast members include Sian Clifford as Ellis’ CFO and No. 1 confidant Anna, Rachel Marsh as shy scientist Luna, Emma Ferreira as outgoing scientist Ruby, and Aaron Branch as Jackson’s childhood best friend and Dragon Company project manager Malcolm. Season 2 will also include some new faces, including recurring guest stars Lamorne Morris (Fargo) and Iris Apatow (The Bubble). Morris will play Peter, the charismatic founder of a biotech start-up whose rising star manages to stoke the already intense rivalry between Ellis and Jackson. Meanwhile, Apatow will portray Georgia, Anna’s irreverent ex-stepdaughter turned unwilling Dragon intern. Georgia copes with office life by stirring up trouble and making Anna’s life more difficult whenever possible. Fred Armisen, Frank Gallegos, JT Parr, Tom Allen, and Sean Clements will also recur.
Andrew Gurland (Married, Platonic) is executive producer and showrunner and Claire Scanlon (Set It Up) is executive producer and director. Sean Clements also executive produces.
The new season of Netflix series “Unstable” tests the relationship of the Lowe father-son duo, who star, as they fight for who should be CEO. After production delays from the writers’ strike last summer, the comedy returns to the streamer Aug. 1.
After securing the reins of his biotech company last season, eccentric entrepreneur Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) faces new challenges as he tries to hold onto his position at the top. Lowe’s real-life son John Owen Lowe plays stuck-in-the-shadows son Jackson in the series.
This season Jackson is poised to take the business off his father’s hands, but not without some pushback. Ellis lays out a series of challenges to see if Jackson really has what it takes to lead the Dragon empire and carry on his legacy.
“No one expects you to be as good as I am,” Ellis tells his son after a competitive tennis match in a new trailer released Monday.
The two — who wrote, created, and executive-produced the series — said the show mirrors their own father-son relationship.
“It’s wildly similar to [me and my dad’s] dynamic,” John Owen told TheWrap ahead of the first season. “The irony is not lost on me that we’re literally acting in a show together about a son who wants to escape his dad’s shadow as I’m attempting to escape my own father’s shadow, and going even deeper into it.”
Fred Armisen and “Fleabag” star Sian Clifford will reprise their roles in the series. Another celeb offspring, Iris Apatow, will join the cast as the company’s new intern alongside Lamorne Morris (“New Girl”), who plays a rival biotech founder vying for the Dragon dynasty.
“Unstable” will premiere on Netflix Aug. 1.
Netflix is done Dragon out the wait for Season 2 of Unstable. The workplace comedy, starring Rob Lowe and son John Owen Lowe, will return on Thursday, Aug. 1, TVLine has learned.
The news, announced on Monday as part of Netflix Is a Joke Fest, came with a bonkers teaser trailer (above), which seemingly answers one of our biggest lingering questions after Season 1.
We wouldn’t blame you for not remembering how the show’s first season wrapped back in March 2023, so allow us to jog your memory: The chilling final scene found Jackson (John Owen Lowe) giving a speech about his father’s (Rob Lowe) integrity and levelheadedness at a crucial board meeting, unaware that Ellis had just torched the car of the woman attempting to oust him.
It was unclear when exactly the torching took place, and we weren’t initially sure whether it actually happened or if Ellis merely imagined doing it. But the teaser trailer suggests that Ellis is potentially facing prison time, which makes us think the torching is canon.
Returning series regulars include Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, John Owen Lowe as Jackson Dragon, Aaron Branch as Malcolm, Emma Ferreira as Ruby, Rachel Marsh as Luna, and Sian Clifford as Anna. This season’s recurring cast, some new and others familiar, include Fred Armisen, Lamorne Morris, Iris Apatow, Frank Gallegos, JT Parr, Tom Allen, and Sean Clements.
