Veteran Bollywood producer and screenwriter Salim Khan recently shared insights into his inter-faith marriage with Salma Khan, formerly known as Sushila Charak. In a candid conversation with his son Arbaaz Khan on the talk show “The Invincibles,” Salim Khan opened up about the challenges they faced due to religious differences.
Salma Khan, born Sushila Charak, hailed from a wealthy Maharashtrian Hindu family. Her family was initially opposed to her relationship with Salim Khan, primarily due to religious differences. Salim Khan recounted his courtship with Sushila, revealing that their secret meetings made him uncomfortable. He decided to meet her parents to address the situation directly.
Salim Khan described the experience of meeting Sushila’s family as overwhelming. He felt as though the entire Maharashtrian community had gathered to scrutinize him. Despite the tension, some family members were supportive. However, Sushila’s father expressed concerns about Salim’s religion, stating, “Religion is not acceptable.”
In response, Salim Khan assured his future father-in-law that while they might face various challenges, religion would never be one of them. This assurance was crucial in gaining some acceptance from the family. Arbaaz Khan revealed that his father had to adopt the name “Shankar” within the family to ease tensions. Salim fondly recalled how Sushila’s grandmother, who was supportive of their relationship, would eagerly await his visits, referring to him as “Shankar.”
