Sam Smith recently suffered a skiing accident that resulted in permanent damage to his knee. The 32-year-old singer, known for hits like "Latch," was seen using a cane and wearing a leg brace earlier this year. He has now opened up about the pain he experienced and the temporary disability he faced after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while skiing.
In a candid conversation on the podcast Sidetracked, Sam shared, "I’ve been focusing a lot on my mental health over the past seven months because I completely tore my ACL. I was skiing and made the mistake of going onto a black run on my second day. I was taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst experience. I have permanent damage."
Recovering from such an injury has not been easy for him. "The ligament is located between the bones and helps you jump. I completely tore it and decided to go for a non-surgical option, but I couldn’t walk for a month, and it was terrible. It was the first time I couldn’t move around, and I felt very heavy. I was anxious and used that as an excuse to pull myself together," he explained.
In an effort to move on from past relationships and experiences, Sam took significant steps in his personal life. He got rid of his old mobile phone and started fresh with a new device that doesn’t have any social media. "I just got rid of my phone and got a new one. It’s the first time I don’t have my music library, which I’ve had since I was about 11. I started completely from scratch. I needed an American number, and my old phone was full of exes and all sorts of people I’ve known over the years. I deleted my social media. It’s all craziness. Now I just sit on park benches, looking at the trees," he added.
Despite his challenges, Sam is set to return to the stage next month for a performance at the BBC Proms.
