Scarlett Johansson took a hint from 1960s styling on Monday while attending the premiere of her latest film, “Fly Me to the Moon.” The period romantic comedy, which costars Channing Tatum, spotlights the decade’s Space Race and subsequent Apollo 11 moon landing.
On the red carpet, Johansson wore a pink gingham set by Prada, which featured a cropped top with beaded trim and a high neckline as well as a pencil maxiskirt. The actress, who was accompanied by her husband, “Saturday Night Live” cast member Colin Jost, accessorized with diamond-encrusted ball drop earrings.
Stylist Kate Young, who also counts Dakota Johnson and Sophie Turner as clients, dressed Johansson for the occasion. Hairdresser David von Cannon styled the actress’ dirty blond tresses in a chignon, while makeup artist Hung Vanngo gave her a pink lip and rosy blush.
Last week, Johansson appeared on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” trying out one of this season’s biggest trends: vests. She selected a double-breasted khaki design by Gabriela Hearst, pairing it with matching pleated wool trousers.
“Fly Me to the Moon” premieres in theaters on Friday, and it will eventually be available to stream on Apple TV+. The film is helmed by “Love, Simon” director Greg Berlanti, who is also known for his work on television shows like “You” and “Dawson’s Creek.”
Is Scarlett Johansson ready to play amongst the stars? That might be her mission in her upcoming film, a stylish space-age romantic comedy titled Fly Me To The Moon. But at the New York premiere for the Apple TV+ production, the former indie darling turned Marvel superhero took sartorial cues from another facet of 60s Americana; Slim Aarons glamour.
Indeed, the actress embraced the glitz and elegance of the halcyon days of that period in a custom Prada set. The jet-set ensemble featured a cropped halterneck top and slim-cut pencil skirt comprised of the same sand-and-cream gingham print. The check top featured a crystal-encrusted trim, with bejewelled pink and pearlescent gem stones evoking the image of kaleidoscopic cosmic dust.
As the current face of Prada Galleria—a boxy everyday tote bag created in 2007 and named after the Italian Maison’s first flagship—Johansson embodies her role of ambassador by embracing a pattern synonymous with the luxuriate’s storied past. The Outset skincare founder kept the remainder of her look rather neutral with a strappy pair of intergalactic silver heels and orb-shaped earrings.
Johansson was joined by her co-star Channing Tatum and husband Colin Jost later on the red carpet. Sadly for us, Tatum wasn’t accompanied by his fiancé Zoë Kravitz, though we’ll presumably see them make their red carpet debut during the press run for her directorial debut, Blink Twice.
The Fly Me To The Moon premiere is the latest Hollywood event to commence the summer blockbuster season, with Daisy Edgar-Jones bringing her custom Vivienne Westwood tornado-inspired dress to the premiere of Twisters and Emma Corrin showcasing their fashion superpower during the promotional tour for Deadpool & Wolverine.
In this film, Johansson portrays a strident marketing executive who plans to produce a “backup” artificial moon landing should the Apollo 11 mission go awry. Tatum plays a NASA astronaut, with the pair’s unexpected relationship the gravity holding the film together.
With references to Stanley Kubrick (who, according to conspiracy theorists, recorded what we believe to be the footage of the first man on the moon in a Hollywood basement) and appearances from comedy stars Woody Harrelson and Ray Romano, this release will have you ready for take off. Or as Frank Sinatra sang in the song of the same name, have you see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars.
Scarlett Johansson dressed to impress at the premiere of her new film Fly Me to the Moon. For the Monday, July 8 screening in New York City, the 39-year-old actress wore not one but two stunning ensembles that scream summer.
Johansson appeared on the red carpet at AMC’s Lincoln Square Theater in a tan-and-cream gingham sleeveless crop top with beaded trim and a matching high-waisted skirt. A tiny sliver of her midriff was visible, revealing part of a tattoo on her rib. She accessorized the Prada look with simple circular earrings.
The actress’ hair, styled by David von Cannon, was swept into a chic French twist with face-framing wisps and added volume at the crown of her head, perhaps a nod to the film’s 1960s setting. Makeup artist Hung Vanngo created a soft glam makeup look for the star, featuring a subtle smoky eye and a pop of pink lip color. On Instagram, Vanngo shared that he used products from Johansson’s skincare brand The Outset to prep her skin before makeup.
The Black Widow star changed into something more colorful for the afterparty — a bright orange halter-style satin minidress. She kept her hair and makeup the same, adding a small clutch purse.
Johansson walked the red carpet with her husband Colin Jost, who wore a navy suit and blue printed floral shirt with a wide collar. The actress and Jost, 42, got married in 2020 and share one child together.
Ahead of the screening, Johansson spoke to PEOPLE about a conspiracy theory that intrigues her.
“I don’t know. I’m so not a conspiracy theorist. I’m like, I really believe in science,” she shared. “I don’t know. I think probably that Dolly Parton has full tattooed sleeves.”
She then added, “Is it real? We’ll find out.”
Fly Me to the Moon, which also stars Channing Tatum, is inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing and the belief that it was staged by the U.S. government. Johansson, who is also a producer on the film, portrays Kelly Jones, a member of NASA’s marketing team tasked with rehabilitating the agency’s public image. Tatum plays launch director Cole Davis.
In a previous conversation with PEOPLE, the actress described her character as a “very modern woman living in a time where women were often underestimated.”
“She uses that to her advantage and is always a few steps ahead,” she said, adding that the film is “totally original.”
“It’s not derivative of anything else, it doesn’t follow a formula,” Johansson continued. “I think audiences haven’t been offered a big-idea movie that is both funny and poignant and original in a long time, and they are hungry for that. The film is totally entertaining and fresh. I’m very proud of it for its newness and scope.”
