Schinas believes that the US “produces more uncertainty than security” and compels Europe to “strengthen its autonomy.”

Margaritis Schinas, the Vice President of the European Commission, has expressed his concerns regarding the current political situation in the United States. Following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election, Schinas suggested that the U.S. now creates “more uncertainty than security, more risks than solutions.” He believes this scenario compels Europe to continue its commitment to rationality and to actively defend multilateralism, alongside enhancing its “strategic autonomy.”

During a summer course at the UPV/EHU in San Sebastián titled “Current Challenges Facing the European Union,” Schinas discussed Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race. He noted that recent events in the U.S. resemble something out of a science fiction movie, particularly highlighting the assassination attempt on one candidate and Biden’s resignation just days later.

Schinas pointed out that these developments raise many questions and uncertainties, which he hopes will be addressed in the coming months. He believes Europe will strengthen its drive toward strategic autonomy and resilience partly in response to the unfolding events in the United States.

“This situation in the U.S. is also acting as a catalyst for Europe to take necessary actions,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of Europe adhering to a logical approach, defending multilateralism, and promoting a society that values democracy, tolerance, and respect for diversity and minorities.

When asked whether a potential victory by Trump in the upcoming U.S. elections might impact aid to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict, Schinas remained cautious. He argued that it is premature to speculate on future events that are yet to unfold. He mentioned that it will ultimately be the American public who decides through their vote in November. Following that, he believes transatlantic dialogue between Europeans and Americans will be vital for discussing issues of mutual interest.
