At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, excitement filled the air as Marvel Studios unveiled the first official look at the upcoming film, Thunderbolts. Among the highlights of the event was the reveal of a brand-new costume for the character Red Guardian, portrayed by David Harbour.
Harbour made a memorable entrance, showcasing his new suit, which, while reminiscent of his previous look in Black Widow, features several notable upgrades. The most striking changes include the addition of tan leather panels on his shoulders and sides, giving the costume a more armored appearance. The new chest plate resembles a repurposed catcher’s plate, painted red to match the overall aesthetic of the suit.
The Thunderbolts film is shrouded in mystery, with little information available about its plot. However, speculation suggests that the team will face off against The Sentry, played by Lewis Pullman. In a previous interview, Harbour likened the film’s narrative structure to a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, hinting at a diverse group of characters coming together for a common goal.
The film is directed by Jake Schreier, with a script penned by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo. Alongside Harbour, the cast includes notable names such as Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, and Geraldine Viswanathan.
Thunderbolts is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2025, as part of Marvel’s expansive slate, which also includes titles like Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, and The Fantastic Four.
During the panel, Harbour’s new suit was a focal point, showcasing a more battle-ready design compared to his previous attire. The updated costume features various armor plates, with white accents on the chest and neck area. The neck is predominantly white and tan, while the original white X on the chest has been replaced with wing-like stripes. Additionally, the suit includes armor plates on the legs, tan shoulder pads, and white stripes on the sides of the abdomen, all contributing to a more formidable look.
Interestingly, the new suit diverges significantly from the official concept image released for Thunderbolts, which depicted a fully red-and-black uniform without any white or tan accents. This discrepancy raises questions about potential costume upgrades within the film’s storyline, suggesting that Alexei Shostakov may receive new suits from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine as part of his character arc.
As fans eagerly await the release of Thunderbolts, the introduction of Red Guardian’s new costume adds an exciting layer to the character’s development and the film’s overall narrative. With a talented cast and a promising premise, Thunderbolts is shaping up to be a thrilling addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
