Shannen Doherty spent her final weeks facing the “hardest moment” of her life due to cancer. The former ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ star lost her long battle with the disease on Saturday, July 13. In late June, she confided in her friend Katherine Heigl, 45, about the hell she was experiencing because of her illness.
During an episode of her podcast, ‘Let’s Be Clear,’ Shannen shared her journey with cancer. She explained, “I had cancer in 2015, and it went into remission, I believe, at the end of 2017 or early 2018. But it returned in 2019 as stage 4 breast cancer, and from there, it spread to my bones and then to my brain. There are so many protocols. Eventually, those protocols stop being effective, and you just hope to hang on long enough for someone to come up with another treatment. It’s incredibly tough. This is probably the hardest time I’ve ever had with cancer. I’ve usually felt somewhat positive, but now I’m very sensitive. I want to cry every second, whether it’s about the good or the bad.”
Shannen also shared how living with cancer transformed her perspective on life. She remarked, “The most beautiful part is that you become so sensitive that you open your eyes to everything around you, to people, to their reactions, and to what you can do to make the world better. It makes you think about your purpose here. I’ve struggled with that my whole life, being a child actress and then growing up in the industry. I never felt fully accepted. I would look at the cast of ‘Friends’ and think, ‘Oh my God, I want to hang out with Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox.’ But I was also left wondering, ‘Why doesn’t anyone accept me? Why do they always label me as the bad girl?’ For me, cancer opened my eyes. At one point, I realized, ‘I don’t need to hang out with any of those people. I just need to make sure I’m happy and live my life to the fullest while I’m still here.’”
