Showrunners Reveal Saurons New Form in Rings of Power Trailer

Prime Video has unveiled an exciting teaser trailer for the highly anticipated second season of “The Rings of Power,” along with a premiere date and a captivating story description. This reveal took place during Amazon’s inaugural upfront presentation in New York City.

The trailer showcases Charlie Vickers reprising his role as Sauron, but with a strikingly different appearance. This new form is designed to help him deceive the inhabitants of Middle-earth more effectively. Fans can expect to return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, where the narrative will delve into Sauron’s growing malevolence as he embarks on a relentless quest for ultimate power. The new season is set to premiere on August 2.

The official description of Season Two reads: “In Season Two of The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season One’s epic scope and ambition, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.”

“The Rings of Power” has already made a significant impact, becoming Prime Video’s most-watched premiere day and accumulating over 32 billion minutes streamed. The first season faced competition from HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” but the second season will launch around the time when “House of the Dragon” is concluding its own second season.

The teaser trailer was released shortly after Warner Bros. announced a new film titled “The Hunt for Gollum,” which is also set during Tolkien’s Second Age and features original trilogy director Peter Jackson in a producing role.

Returning showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are at the helm for the second season. The directing team includes Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Louise Hooper, all of whom are set to bring their unique visions to the series.

In a recent panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Charlie Vickers, who plays Sauron, expressed confidence about reprising his role despite the character’s shape-shifting nature. In Season 1, Vickers portrayed Halbrand, a character created by the showrunners as a guise for Sauron during the late Second Age. In Tolkien’s lore, Sauron is known for his ability to change forms, notably taking on the guise of Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, to manipulate the races of Middle-earth into creating the Rings of Power.

Some fans speculated whether Sauron would be portrayed by different actors in each season, reflecting his penchant for disguise and deception. However, Vickers confirmed that he would return as Sauron in Season 2, this time embodying the character’s fairer form as Annatar, which is prominently featured in the new trailer.

During the Comic-Con panel, Vickers was asked if he feared being recast due to Sauron’s shape-shifting abilities. He humorously dismissed the idea, stating he had “full faith” that he would not be replaced for the upcoming season. Additionally, he hinted at more interactions between his character, “Hot Sauron,” and Galadriel, played by Morfydd Clark, which fans can look forward to in the new episodes.

The new trailer offers a tantalizing glimpse into the world of “The Rings of Power” as it gears up for its return to San Diego Comic-Con, following its impressive debut in 2022. The excitement surrounding the series continues to build, with several cast members set to appear at IGN’s SDCC show.

“The Rings of Power” will premiere with three episodes on Prime Video on August 29, and fans are eagerly awaiting the continuation of this epic saga. As the story unfolds, viewers can expect to see the intricate dynamics between characters and the escalating conflict that threatens to engulf Middle-earth.
