Sira Rego emphasizes that the alternative left united in Sumar needs to establish a “strong and solid” space.

Sira Rego, the Minister of Youth and Childhood, emphasized the need for a strong and reliable left-wing space alongside the PSOE, particularly within the coalition of Sumar. She stressed that her party, IU, has always aspired to unity.

Rego dismissed any notion of fractures with parliamentary partners that could jeopardize the government. She highlighted the legislative achievements made thus far, suggesting that significant progress has been accomplished during this legislative session.

Speaking at a New Economy Forum breakfast, Rego addressed concerns about the future of Sumar and IU’s role in this coalition. She pointed out the importance of uniting transformative left forces around a national project during the last general elections, viewing this as a crucial and qualitative leap for the left.

She articulated the necessity of solidifying a left-wing coalition, acknowledging potential “contradictions” among diverse groups but underscoring the priority of dialogue and looking towards the future together.

Rego noted that IU offers a rich historical background and territorial grounding, which are vital assets for forming a united front. The objective is to create a robust and sustainable alternative left that can maintain a balance of power in the country, ultimately fostering progressive governments committed to expanding rights.

“Our focus should be on continuing to work towards a minimum program that supports a progressive and rights-based nation. Understanding and collaboration among various political forces are essential. Many of us share an optimistic vision for building alliances, which is our main goal. Our commitment to unity remains unwavering,” she concluded.

Additionally, when asked about whether friction with coalition partners complicates the legislative process, Rego defended the government’s efforts, stating that progress continues despite the challenging parliamentary arithmetic.

“I don’t agree that there are significant divisions with our partners. We are actively working and making notable social advances in rights. We will continue on this path,” she affirmed.
