Spain will host the XXX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government in 2026. This decision comes after the 22 countries that are part of the Ibero-American Community unanimously supported the bid presented by the Spanish Government, as announced by the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB).
José Manuel Albares, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, celebrated the news on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his gratitude to SEGIB and the member countries for their backing. He emphasized Spain’s commitment to the Ibero-American vision of having a prominent presence in the world. The Government also thanked those who supported Spain’s candidacy.
Following the XXIX Summit, which is set to take place this November in Cuenca, Ecuador, Spain will take on the Pro Tempore Secretariat. This role will involve leading the preparatory work for the next summit, although the specific location is yet to be determined.
Andrés Allamand, the Ibero-American Secretary General, congratulated the Spanish Government on this designation and pointed out Spain’s consistent commitment to the Ibero-American project.
The primary goal for the upcoming summit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is to initiate a new phase of reaffirming the Ibero-American system. This will involve identifying priority areas of action from the member states within the framework of a common agenda.
During this summit, the Ibero-American Cooperation 2026-2029 Four-Year Action Plan is expected to be approved. This plan will enhance the summit’s importance, highlighting that Ibero-American cooperation is a cornerstone of the system, translating the mandates of heads of state and government into concrete initiatives that will have a direct and positive impact on Ibero-American citizens.
This will mark the fourth time that Spain has hosted an Ibero-American Summit since the first one took place in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1991. Spain previously hosted summits in Madrid in 1992, Salamanca in 2005, and Cádiz in 2012. The annual event transitioned to a biennial format starting in 2014.
