State Secures Over €23 Million Bernini Artwork for Thyssen Museum Exhibit

The government has approved a guarantee exceeding 23 million euros for the display of the artwork ‘San Sebastián’, created in 1615 by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini. This masterpiece will be exhibited at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza from September 16, 2024, to September 15, 2025.

The total economic value of this painting, protected by the state guarantee, amounts to 23,007,546.48 euros. Additionally, the government has also approved guarantees for three works by the artist Umberto Boccioni, which will be showcased in a temporary exhibition titled ‘Esperpento’ at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, running from October 8, 2024, to March 10, 2025.

The combined value of the works covered by the state guarantee for this exhibition reaches 110,578,695.17 euros. Lastly, the painting ‘Cristo crucificado’ by Doménico Theotocópuli, known as El Greco, has also been secured for display in the permanent collection of the Museo del Greco from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. The guarantee for this artwork is set at 3 million euros.
