Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden is set to share her personal battle with breast cancer in an upcoming BBC documentary. The film, tentatively titled “Amy Dowden: Fight of My Life,” will air on BBC One this summer, just before her anticipated return to the dance floor. Dowden, who missed last year’s series due to her illness, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2023 at the age of 32. She discovered a lump in her breast the day before embarking on her honeymoon.
In a statement about the documentary, Dowden expressed how the diagnosis dramatically altered her life. “It was an exciting new chapter in my life, but finding a lump on my breast changed my life,” she said. “I never thought at my age I would get cancer and, despite having family members and friends who were cancer survivors, had no idea just what the impact on my life would be.” She hopes the film will inspire others to check themselves regularly, regardless of age.
Dowden allowed cameras to document her journey just six days after her diagnosis, capturing her experiences over 15 months. Diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, she underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and fertility treatment. In July, she received the devastating news that the cancer had spread and another type of cancer had been discovered. Despite these challenges, Dowden participated in the group dance during the Strictly final in December. By February, a health check revealed “no evidence of disease.”
On Monday, it was confirmed that Dowden, originally from Caerphilly, will rejoin the professional line-up for this year’s Strictly series. She expressed her joy on Instagram, writing, “so happy and grateful to be back.” Dowden has previously been open about her health struggles, featuring in a 2020 documentary about living with Crohn’s disease. She also founded a dance studio in Cradley, West Midlands, in 2016.
Breast cancer symptoms can include a new lump or thickened tissue in the breast, changes in breast size or shape, nipple discharge, lumps or swelling in the armpits, skin changes like puckering or redness, and changes in nipple appearance. While these symptoms can be caused by other conditions, it is crucial to consult a GP for a proper diagnosis.
Dowden’s decision to share her story aims to raise awareness and provide hope to others facing similar battles. “I hope others find hope and strength from this film, and that it encourages everyone to check themselves, no matter what age you are,” she said. Her journey has been a testament to her resilience and determination to turn a negative experience into a positive one.
In a recent interview with Hello! magazine, Dowden revealed her diagnosis to her 328,000 Instagram followers. “Hey all, I’ve got some news which isn’t easy to share. I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer but I’m determined to get back on that dancefloor before you know it. Welsh love Amy,” she wrote. Dowden, who has been a Strictly professional since 2017, has also been a vocal advocate for Crohn’s Disease awareness.
Reflecting on her diagnosis, Dowden said, “I’ve been through quite a lot in my life and this is another hurdle. But if I’m positive and strong, I’ve got a really good chance of getting back out on the dancefloor as soon as possible.” She emphasized the importance of regular self-checks, regardless of age or gender.
Dowden discovered the lump in her breast a day before her honeymoon to the Maldives. Initially, she thought it might be related to her menstrual cycle but decided to monitor it. During her holiday, she became increasingly aware of the lump and sought medical advice upon her return. An emergency referral led to a swift diagnosis and the realization that she would need support for the results.
Grade three cancer, as explained by the NHS, means the cancer cells look abnormal and may grow or spread more aggressively. Dowden is still awaiting further information on her cancer’s stage, pending an MRI scan and a biopsy on a second lump found in the same breast.
Throughout her journey, Dowden has maintained a positive outlook, drawing on the mental strength she developed while managing Crohn’s disease. “I’m going to be as positive as I can and I want everybody who is surrounding me to also be positive – that’s really important,” she said. Her story underscores the critical importance of early detection and regular self-examinations.
Dowden’s openness about her health challenges aims to inspire others to take proactive steps in their own health journeys. Her return to Strictly Come Dancing will undoubtedly be a moment of triumph and resilience, showcasing her unwavering spirit and dedication to her craft.
