Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, recently revealed a personal health scare involving skin cancer. The 47-year-old media personality shared his experience on the latest episode of his “BFFs” podcast, co-hosted by Brianna “Chickenfry” LaPaglia and Josh Richards.
During the podcast, LaPaglia noticed a mark on Portnoy’s neck and inquired about it. Portnoy confirmed that it was indeed a scar from a recent procedure to remove a cancerous mole. He explained that he had undergone a routine skin check, during which doctors discovered the mole was cancerous. The mole was subsequently removed, and Portnoy received stitches to close the wound.
Portnoy disclosed that the diagnosis was basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer that typically develops on sun-exposed areas of the skin. Despite the diagnosis, Portnoy remained nonchalant about the situation, stating that it was “not scary” and that he had “beat it.” He attributed the cancer to his habit of tanning without using sunscreen.
The internet personality shared that he had about 10 to 12 stitches after the procedure. He joked about the lack of attention his scar received, even considering reopening the wound to draw more concern. Portnoy emphasized that he didn’t want sympathy, noting that basal cell carcinoma is one of the more manageable forms of cancer.
Portnoy’s revelation came with a mix of humor and resilience. He mentioned that he had previously survived a heart attack and bee stings, adding cancer to the list of challenges he had overcome. He expressed gratitude to LaPaglia for noticing his scar and acknowledged his right to call himself a cancer survivor.
The Barstool Sports founder’s candid discussion about his skin cancer diagnosis and treatment highlights the importance of regular skin checks and sun protection. Despite his casual demeanor, Portnoy’s experience serves as a reminder of the potential risks of prolonged sun exposure without proper protection.
