M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, "Trap," takes inspiration from none other than Taylor Swift. Set during a pop music concert, the suspenseful mystery revolves around the police setting an elaborate trap to catch a serial killer. Shyamalan described the concept as "What if ‘Silence of the Lambs’ took place at a Taylor Swift concert?"
In an interview with Empire magazine, he mentioned, "I directed a whole concert! And it wasn’t just a backdrop. It’s equally important. There’s no fake concert. I love the idea of cinema as windows within windows. One of the reasons to watch this movie in theaters is that there’s literally a real concert you can’t see anywhere else except in this film. I truly believe in original cinema. I want the industry to move towards more original narratives. I think audiences would appreciate that a lot. I know intellectual property is a safer bet, but it’s crucial that we go to the movies and experience something we’ve never seen before. I will continue to fight for that."
The pop star featured in the concert is Lady Raven, portrayed by Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka Shyamalan. The director admitted that his daughter’s rising music career influenced the story as well.
Josh Hartnett, who plays the lead role in the film, has previously described it as "very dark." He shared with IndieWire that, "It’s a twist. But I try to make all my roles twisty. If you’re playing the same thing over and over, it gets boring for the audience. Working with M. Night has been one of the best experiences of my career. I think he’s a true artist in the truest sense of the word. I believe people will be surprised and excited about the movie we’re making. It’s very strange, very dark, and wild."
Warner Bros Pictures is set to release "Trap" on August 2nd, as part of a multi-year distribution agreement with the studio. In a previous statement, studio executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy praised Shyamalan, stating, "Night is one of the most iconic and influential directors of his generation and an author in every sense of the word."
From "The Sixth Sense" to "Split" and his latest thriller, "Knock at the Cabin," Shyamalan is one of the few contemporary filmmakers whose name alone promises a bold and unique vision, an original and compelling narrative, and a provocative, surprising, and wholly unique experience. "We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him to the Warner Bros. family, and we look forward to an exciting collaboration with Night and the entire Blinding Edge team."
