The Chief Minister of Gibraltar: “Spain is an opportunity, but also a disappointment”

Fabian Picardo, the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, has expressed his motivation for entering politics as a way to cultivate shared prosperity with Spain. However, he lamented the dogmatism that prevents this collaboration, stating, "Spain is an opportunity, but also a disappointment."

In a recent interview with ‘La Vanguardia’ reported by Europa Press, Picardo was asked if he feels Gibraltar is often disrespected by Spain. He admitted that, "sometimes yes," emphasizing that many misconceptions about Gibraltarians are false. He firmly stated, "We are not smugglers, nor is Gibraltar a tax haven," highlighting that they adhere to financial transparency obligations.

When questioned about sovereignty issues that may hinder a potential agreement with Spain regarding Gibraltar’s relationship with the EU post-Brexit, Picardo indicated that negotiations extend beyond the concept of sovereignty. He noted his disappointment with the Spanish right and far-right, which he believes perpetuate a "spirit of reconquest" regarding Gibraltar.

Picardo underscored the significance of Gibraltar’s location at the entrance of the Mediterranean, which brings "great responsibility," similar to that shared by Algeciras and Tangier. He mentioned that together, they could develop a substantial logistical zone, asserting, "There is no other place like it in Europe and Africa." He remains hopeful that an agreement will be reached soon if parties approach discussions in good faith.

Regarding tax matters, Picardo defended Gibraltar’s unique fiscal status. He explained that Gibraltar cannot operate under the same tax regime as Spain because that would hinder their goal of shared prosperity. When asked about the possibility of eliminating the border, he shared his desire to leave a legacy for his children that reflects the Gibraltar of his father and grandfather’s time—a period when the border was negligible, fostering fluid contact and understanding.
