The Democratic Party Secured Its Largest Fundraising Haul of the Year in Support of Kamala Harris

ActBlue, the fundraising arm of the Democratic Party, announced on Sunday that it had achieved its highest single-day fundraising total for the 2024 elections. This surge followed President Joe Biden’s decision to step down from his candidacy and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.

By 9 PM, grassroots supporters had raised $46.7 million through ActBlue after Harris launched her campaign. The organization shared this impressive figure on social media, highlighting that it marked the largest fundraising day of the 2024 election cycle.

Biden expressed his full support for Kamala Harris, making her the first woman, African American, and South Asian vice president in U.S. history. In response, Harris praised Biden’s “selfless and patriotic” act and stated her determination to win the Democratic nomination.

As Biden’s supporters gathered near the White House to thank him, he remained in Delaware. Among them, many Democrats were effusive in their praise, calling him a “patriot.” However, the party now faces the challenge of finding a replacement as the convention in Chicago approaches on August 19.

While Harris is seen as a natural choice for the nomination, the final decision rests with the 3,900 delegates, many of whom are largely unknown to the public. Nonetheless, Harris’s candidacy has instilled a sense of optimism within the party.

Former President Barack Obama described Biden as a “patriot” but acknowledged the uncertainty the party faces in the coming days. He also gained support from a potential rival within the party, California Governor Gavin Newsom, who suggested that Harris is “best positioned” to confront Donald Trump’s “dark vision.”

Biden’s decision received a positive response internationally, with leaders from countries such as Australia and Israel expressing approval. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Biden for his “bold measures” in support of Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. In contrast, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro referred to Biden’s choice to withdraw as “wise and correct.”

In the wake of Biden’s historic announcement, Kamala Harris stated she is ready to step in as the Democratic candidate and “defeat” Republican Donald Trump in the upcoming elections. In her statement, released just an hour after Biden’s, Harris emphasized her commitment to uniting the Democratic Party and the nation, declaring, “We have 107 days until election day. Together we will fight. And together we will win.”

Biden’s announcement has shifted the strategy for Trump, who remarked that they need to “start over.” Trump’s team predicts that Harris will be “even worse” than Biden, with the former president confidently asserting that “Kamala will be easier to defeat than Joe Biden.”
